Reconciliation of the Seventeen Calendars
MS 5037.25 · Practices and doctrines
Reconciliation of the Seventeen Calendars is the formal administrative practice of aligning the disparate chronologies of the seventeen primary Cyclical Calendars in use across the lower administrative spirals of the Tower. Governed by Provisocol 12, Annex C, it is considered a subset of the broader Reconciliation of Authorities, though it possesses unique procedural and metaphysical complications.
Scope and Mandate
The practice was formally instituted by The Seventeen Provisional Protocols following the Aris Reconciliation, which highlighted the dangers of unsynchronized temporal measurement in proximity to dimensional anomalies. The Reconciliation of the Seventeen Calendars does not seek to create a single, unified timeline; rather, it aims to establish a coherent framework for translating events, appointments, and archival timestamps from one calendrical system to another without generating paradox or narrative lacunae. Its jurisdiction is primarily Floors 199 through 881, where the majority of the Seventeen Calendars hold regulatory sway.
Procedural Framework
Reconciliation is conducted by a joint committee comprising members of the Guild of Horologists and the Sub-Bureau of Temporal Reconciliation. The core procedure involves three phases:
- Phase One: Calibration. Each calendar is measured against the Metronomic Pulse over a standardised period of one Pulse-Cycle (approximately 47 Tower-days). This establishes a "temporal coefficient" for each system.
- Phase Two: Cross-Indexing. Key anchor events—such as the opening of a Spiral or the ratification of a Concordance—are logged in all seventeen systems. The resulting data matrix reveals systemic drifts and seasonal folds.
- Phase Three: Publication. A Revised Intercalary Schedule is issued, which dictates when and how to insert or subtract "reconciliation days" to maintain minimum coherence. This schedule is legally binding for all administrative scheduling on affected floors.
Philosophical Disputes
A significant doctrinal rift exists regarding the ultimate goal of the practice. The mainstream position, held by the Office of Temporal Reconciliation, asserts that reconciliation is an infinite, asymptotic process—a permanent bureaucratic function. A minority school, associated with the Keepers of the Ascent, argues that the Seventeen Calendars are not truly disparate but are seventeen facets of a single, perfect chronology obscured by archival error. They believe a final, perfect reconciliation is possible and would manifest as the Seventeen Sealing Verses becoming audibly resonant.
Furthermore, Provisocol 7 states the Reconciliation must account for "ambient temporal gradients," a clause interpreted by the Office of Spatial Reconciliation to mean that location (specific shelf, desk, or even page) within a floor can affect local timeflow. This has led to protracted inter-departmental disputes, most notably during the Reconciliation of Luminal Gradients of Floor 207.
Notable Reconciliation Events
- The Forty-Seven Year Aris Reconciliation (Floor 404)
- Established the canonical model for modern material reconciliation and proved the necessity of including gravitational lensing effects from nearby Apertures in all calculations.
- The Silent Reconciliation (Floor 199)
- A seven-year period during which all reconciliation outputs were published without explanatory commentary, due to a consensus that any rationale provided would be inherently contradictory. This period is cited by the Committee of Concordant Reconciliation as a precedent for managing irreconcilable data.
- The Concordance Reconciliation of 302
- Triggered when it was discovered that the ratification dates for Concordances 148 through 302 formed a non-convergent series across nine of the seventeen calendars, threatening the legal validity of the protocols themselves. This reconciliation required the creation of a "temporal escrow" holding dates in abeyance until consensus could be forced.
Current Status
As of the latest Revised Intercalary Schedule (Pulse-Cycle 881-Alpha), the mean divergence among the Seventeen Calendars stands at 3.02 subjective years per Pulse-Cycle, with a standard deviation of 1.7 years. The Seventeen Provisional Protocols remain in force, though they were nominally superseded by the Provisional Indexing Guidelines; a Reconciliation ruling found the Guidelines themselves could not be implemented without first reconcililing the calendars under the old Protocols, creating a stable, if paradoxical, procedural loop. The practice continues indefinitely, a permanent engine of the Tower's lower administrative machinery.
