Keepers of the Ascent

MS 2234.08 · Guilds, orders and offices

Keepers of the Ascent is a ceremonial office, distinct from the Keepers of the Axis, responsible for the verification and formal ratification of ascents conducted under the provisions of the Third Concordance. Their primary jurisdiction is the Gradient of Ascent/Descent and its associated documentation protocols. The office was established by Ordinance 12, Clause 7, following the Ascent of the First Archon in Year 411 of the Unbroken Catalogue, to ensure that all vertical processions of administrative significance adhered to a codified and auditable form.

Constitutional Basis

The authority of the Keepers of the Ascent is derived from three primary documents. The founding text is Ordinance 12, "On the Solemnization of Vertical Transit," which outlines their core duties of witness, sealing, and entry into the Ledger of Established Vectors. This is supplemented by the Fourth Addendum to Concordance 22, which, while primarily concerned with the Keepers of the Axis, implicitly acknowledges the Keepers of the Ascent as the "executive arm" for the practical application of ratified axes. Finally, their procedural mandate is detailed in Annex C of Ordinance 4, which codifies the traffic rules for the Gradient, over which they hold custodial oversight.

Duties and Rituals

The Keepers' most visible function is the supervision of all formal ascents and descents that claim precedence under any Concordance. This includes, but is not limited to, the biennial Archon's Procession, the triennial review ascent of the Cataloguing Corps Senior Archivist, and any petitionary ascent, such as a claimant's journey to challenge a standing ordinance. For an ascent to be "Keeper-verified," the following rituals are obligatory:

  • The Initial Sealing: At the foot of the Gradient, the presiding Keeper applies a wax seal (impressed with the Sigil of the Ascent) to the primary petitioner's Writ of Transit, after verifying its concordance clause citations against the Master Scroll housed on Spiral 44.
  • The Midpoint Attestation: At the theoretical halfway point of the Gradient's relevant segment (calculated according to the formulae in Ordinance 12, Appendix Γ), the procession must halt. A secondary Keeper, stationed at that aperture, records the exact time, verifies the seal's integrity, and applies a second, counter-seal.
  • The Final Entry: Upon completion of the ascent, the lead Keeper in the destination antechamber inspects both seals, records the total elapsed time, and inscribes the completion in the Ledger of Established Vectors. Only then is the ascent considered legally binding for purposes of precedence or ordinance amendment.

Failure to complete any of these steps invalidates the procedural authority of the ascent, though the physical journey may, of course, continue.

Disputes and the Principle of Perpetual Amendment

The office has been central to several historical controversies. Most notably, the Ascent of the First Archon was formally challenged in Year 812 under the Principle of Perpetual Amendment, with appellants arguing that the Keepers of the Ascent (as an institution created after the event) could not retroactively verify its legitimacy. The Curia of Precedent ruled, however, that the office's authority flows backward through all ratified ascents by virtue of Concordance 22, rendering the challenge moot. A more practical dispute concerns the verification of Ascents Against Current, which the Keepers are technically obligated to prevent per Ordinance 4, yet are sometimes compelled to verify under later, conflicting amendments. This paradox is typically resolved by a Keeper issuing a "Seal of Contested Compliance," a purple-wax seal that validates the ascent's occurrence while simultaneously registering an official protest, which then triggers a mandatory review by the Curia.

Organizational Structure

The Keepers are a small, non-hereditary college of twelve, with members drawn from the senior clerks of the Librarians. They operate in rotating pairs, with one pair always stationed at the Base Apex of the Gradient (Aperture Δ-7) and another at the Summit Apex (Aperture Σ-12). The remaining eight serve as roving verifiers, scholars of precedent, and trainers for novitiates. Leadership is vested in the First Keeper, an office held for a seven-year term. The current First Keeper, appointed in Year 1203, is Keeper Theodosia, formerly of the Spiral 299 scriptorium where the Scroll of Perfect Ascent is housed.

Relationship to the Provost's Ascent

A common point of confusion lies in the distinction between the Gradient of Ascent/Descent, overseen by the Keepers of the Ascent, and the Provost's Ascent. The latter is a separate, enclosed stair linking Floors 80 through 112, used exclusively for the transport of ratified Concordance documents between administrative chambers. While the Provost's Ascent has its own custodians (the Porters of the Provost), any ceremonial procession that uses it—such as the formal filing of a new Addendum—still requires a Keeper of the Ascent to verify its commencement and conclusion at the respective floor portals, applying a simplified, single-seal protocol. This dual oversight is mandated to prevent any conflict of interest between the document carriers and the validators of the act of carriage itself.
