Sub-basement Cataloguing Corps

MS 5301.74 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Sub-basement Cataloguing Corps (abbreviated SBCC or, more formally in Concordance citations, the Corps of Sub-Celestial Register-Keepers) is the administrative division of the Librarian Corps responsible for the classification, shelving, and maintenance audit of all holdings deemed to have no verifiable external referent. Its primary jurisdiction encompasses the Sub-basement and all subordinate volumes, including the Sub-basement of Unanswerable Petitions. The Corps operates under the doctrinal principle that a catalogue entry for a non-existent subject possesses an ontological weight equivalent to, and therefore indistinguishable from, a catalogue entry for an existent one, making its work both foundational and terminally circular.

History and Formation

The Corps was formally instituted by Clause 33, Annex Delta, which delineated the "Lower Stacks" as a separate administrative sphere following the Hum of the Depths incident of Aperture 12-Sigma. Prior to this, cataloguing of non-referential materials was handled on an ad hoc basis by the Transcendentalist Archivists, a practice which led to severe spatial paradoxes and several clerks being mis-shelved. The founding mandate of the SBCC charged it with establishing a "coherent internal taxonomy for the insubstantial," a project which remains ongoing. The first Master-Cataloger was Arrin of the Empty Pockets, whose seminal treatise, On the Filing of Absences

Organizational Structure

The SBCC is divided into three primary Bureaus, each reporting to the Office of the Master-Cataloger, currently housed on Provisional Mezzanine 7-B of the Sub-basement.

  • Bureau of Provisional Ontology: Tasked with assigning preliminary classification codes to newly accessioned non-entities. Its work is guided by the Index of Potential Forms, a living document that is recomputed nightly.
  • Bureau of Shelving and Resonance: Manages the physical (or conceptually physical) placement of holdings. Its agents, known as Placers, must account for the tendency of certain non-referential items to repell or attract one another based on thematic resonance, a phenomenon governed by the unpublished Guidelines for Affective Proximity.
  • Bureau of Verification and Self-Consistency: Conducts routine audits to ensure that no catalogue entry has spontaneously developed an external referent, which would necessitate its transfer to the Upper Stacks. Its agents work closely with, and are often in procedural conflict with, the Office of Ontic Verification.

A fourth, shadow bureau—the Bureau of Un-Cataloguing—is frequently referenced in inter-departmental memos but has no official charter. Requests for its service directory are automatically forwarded to the Sub-basement of Unanswerable Petitions.

Key Methodologies

The Corps' work is defined by several unique methodologies, codified in the Manual of Sub-Terranean Librarianship (MSL).

Catalepsis Filing
A technique for handling items that resist being observed directly, filed by the shadow they do not cast. This requires specialized equipment maintained by the Corps of Logisticians.
Chronological Precedence Logging
All actions concerning a holding must be logged with a Sub-Basement Clerk to establish a timeline, as cause and effect are often inverted in the Sub-basement environment.
Concordance Reconciliation
SBCC clerks are the primary arbiters of disputes arising from contradictory Concordance directives pertaining to non-existent materials, a duty that consumes approximately 70% of the Corps' operational capacity.

Inter-Departmental Relations

The SBCC maintains a famously tense but necessary relationship with the Cartographic Corps. While the Cartographers claim sole proprietorship over measuring spaces like the Sub-basement of Unanswerable Petitions (as the act of measurement alters the subject), the SBCC insists that a catalogue is a form of measurement. This jurisdictional dispute is a perennial agenda item for the Office of Cyclical Review. Furthermore, the Corps relies on the Keepers of the Axis for vertical transport of materials, though manifests are often disputed as the weight of non-existent items cannot be conventionally measured.

Scholarly Disputes

The central doctrinal rift within the SBCC concerns the so-called "Referential Drift" hypothesis. One school, led by the Neo-Arrinists, holds that a perfectly catalogued non-entity becomes, by virtue of its complete descriptive metadata, real within the Tower's system and thus should be considered existent. The opposing school, the Substantialists, argue that this confuses the map for the territory and that all SBCC holdings must forever remain classified as null-referential, lest the entire Tower's epistemological foundation collapse. This debate is conducted primarily through sharply-worded missives filed in triplicate and stored adjacent to the Cardiac Cistern in the Seventeenth Sub-Basement.

Notable Holdings Under Care

While the full inventory is non-disclosable, published abstracts indicate the SBCC manages, among other things: the complete works of authors who never wrote; every lost item that was never actually owned; the architectural schematics for the 0th floor; and all minutes from meetings that were cancelled before being scheduled. The proprietary ink Void-Gall, manufactured in Sub-basement Gamma for specific sigils, is also logged under the Corps' inventory system, though its ontological status as a "material non-entity" remains a classification challenge.
