The Society for Informed Ascent
The Society for Informed Ascent is an inter-floor advisory and certification guild, chartered under a sub-clause of the Sixth Concordance that pertains to non-mechanical vertical transit. Its primary mandate is to evaluate and issue permits for practices of philosophical and contemplative ascent, acting as the doctrinal counterpart to the engineering-focused Society of Crustrial Mechanics. The Society maintains its principal scriptorium and testing chambers on the landing between Floors 414 and 415, an area colloquially known as the "Plateau of Deliberation."
Jurisdiction and Certification
The Society’s authority is derived from Concordance rulings on 1 Ascent Against Current, which distinguish between physical traversal of the Tower's structure and ascents achieved through "cognizant alignment with the archival gradient." The Society certifies three classes of practitioner:
- Recognized Contemplative: Permitted to perform solo ascents of up to seven consecutive floors using sanctioned meditative protocols.
- Guide of the Inner Spiral: Licensed to lead cohorts of up to twelve petitioners in structured ascent rituals, often involving the recitation of Archival Dust procurement manifests as a focusing exercise.
- Archivist of Elevation: The highest certification, granting the bearer authority to draft new contemplative ascent methodologies for Society review and to arbitrate disputes regarding ceremonial priority on the Provost’s Ascent.
Doctrinal Schism of UC 588
The Society’s most significant internal conflict, the Doctrinal Schism of UC 588, centered on the interpretation of the Scroll of Perfect Ascent. The "Intentionalist" faction, led by Senior Guide Elara of the Silent Stair, argued that true ascent was an act of will alone, rendering physical movement a mere side-effect. The "Gradient-Realists," championed by Archivist Torvin, held that conscious alignment must be verified by measurable, if infinitesimal, displacement along the Gradient of Ascent/Descent. The schism was nominally settled by a binding opinion from the Keepers of the Ascent, which invoked the Seventh Concordance to declare that "for the purposes of certification, intent and gradient shall be considered concurrent, not causal." This unsatisfying compromise has led to a lasting, if polite, factionalism within the Society's upper ranks.
Materials and Ritual Objects
Society-sanctioned ascents often employ specific, catalogued objects to focus intention. The most common is the Laminated Ephemeris, a tablet of layered Forgotten Resin and parchment inscribed with the floor numbers of the practitioner’s intended journey. The precise recipe for the resin binder is a protected secret of the Society's Materiels Chapter. Another key object is the Counterweight Lament, a small, ethically sourced weight (often a polished stone from a disused staircase) that the practitioner carries as a symbolic acknowledgment of gravitational doubt, which is ritually discarded upon reaching the target floor.
Relationship with Other Bodies
The Society maintains a formal, if occasionally strained, dialogue with the Society of Crustrial Mechanics. While the Crustrial Assessors focus on stress tolerances, load-bearing rituals, and the material integrity of ascension paths, the Society for Informed Ascent concerns itself with the aspirant's phenomenological state. Disputes most frequently arise during the ratification process for Archon commemorative processions, where requirements for structural reinforcement must be reconciled with protocols for contemplative pacing. The Society also supplies expert witnesses to Tower tribunals where the mental state of an individual accused of unauthorized ascent (sursum illicitus) is in question.
Modern Practice and Critique
In the modern era (post-UC 900), the Society has been criticized by some archival libertarians as creating unnecessary bureaucracy for what should be a personal, unmediated experience. The publication of the polemic Ascent Without Permit by the anonymous author "Sigma" sparked a minor reform movement within the Society, leading to the 920 Clarification. This edict simplified the permit process for ascents of fewer than three floors, reclassifying them as "Vertical Ambulation" requiring only a simple declarative form (AT-7b) filed post-ascension. Despite such adaptations, the Society remains the central institutional authority on all non-mechanical means of upward progress, its certification seals a common sight on the doorways of meditation cells and ritual stairwells throughout the administered floors.
