Horologists of the Seventh Turn

MS 5981.39 · Guilds, orders and offices

Horologists of the Seventh Turn are a recognized subsidiary order of time-craft within the Tower, established under the shared administrative purview of the Guild of Horologists and the Chronurgy Guild over matters arising on the thirty-seventh turn of Spiral Staircase Omega. Unlike the defunct Horologists' Guild, whose insignia once sealed the entrance to Clockmaker's Landing, the Horologists of the Seventh Turn maintain an active scriptorium and are cited in nine recensions of the Third Concordance concerning the conduct of the Reconciliation of the Seventeen Calendars.

Origins and Charter

The order was constituted in the 1,204th year of the Year of the Seventh Librarian, following a procedural motion by Kael, then Senior Archivist, who proposed the turn later ratified as the discovery of the Clearing of the Seventh Recess. The Third Concordance, Clause 891, enumerates the three primary mandates of the parent Guild of Horologists, and the Seventh Turn appended a fourth local mandate by unanimous scratch of the founding twelve. The Seventh Amendment to the local charter prohibited the casting of temporal energy during the ringing of The Seventh Chime, a restriction the Chronurgy Guild endorsed as "a courtesy to the floor below."

Disagreement persists as to whether the order's name denotes residence on the seventh turn or allegiance to the seventh in a sequence of turn-based rites. The Commentaries on the Seventh Concordance hold the former; the Seventh Spiral's marginalia hold the latter. The Seventh Revision Concordancetwelfth does not settle the question, noting only that "the Turn is Seventh and the matter is closed though not concluded."

Practice and Apparatus

The Horologists of the Seventh Turn favor a granular, causal approach to temporal anomalies, in contrast to the Subbureau of Temporal Reconciliation's doctrine of Temporal Subordination, a position inherited from the Guild of Horologists. They employ The Lathe to turn conceptual abstractions into stable, catalogable forms, a process documented in the inventory of Annex 7, the classified observation facility located on the thirty-seventh turn of Spiral Staircase Omega.

Licensed Porters delivering calendrical matter to the order are bound by The Right-Hand Turn Rule, adherence to which is absolute in the jurisdictions surrounding the Marrow Staircase. A porter who fails the rule at the sixth landing is recorded as having exited the protocol at Phase 6, per the argument of the Guild of Horologists that a successfully reconciled entity does so. The Cyclical Calendars administered jointly by the Guild of Horologists and the Chronurgy Guild are reconciled here on the first dusk of each recorded cycle.

"No horologist of the Seventh Turn shall commence a reconciliation while the previous reconciliation remains cited as ongoing."

— Seventh Amendment, Schedule B

The Recension Dispute of 1,388

In the 1,388th year of the Year of the Seventh Librarian, a clerk named Vessen of the Lower Scriptoria submitted a recension asserting that the Reconciliation of the Seventeen Calendars had in fact produced eighteen, the seventeenth being a Circular Reference introduced by the Narrative Feedback Loops office. The Seventh Metalwrights refused to strike the extra calendar from the bronze tablets, citing the Precedential Loop doctrine. The dispute was referred to Annex 7, where it remains under observation and is cross-listed as The Echo of Unfinished Business.

Vessen's grievance was that the Third Concordance contradicted the Seventh Revision Concordancetwelfth on the count of mandates; the former named three, the latter implied four. The order's response, recorded in the Commentaries on the Seventh Concordance, was that "a contradiction in the Concordances is not an error but a floor plan."

Customs of the Turn

Members of the order observe the The Seventh Chime by cessation of all lathe-work and by facing the Clearing of the Seventh Recess. Visitors are permitted to observe from the outer ledge provided they do not count the chimes aloud, as counting is held to invite a Precedential Loop. The Seventh Spiral's notes add that a visitor who loses count shall be issued a slip of red vellum and escorted to the Marrow Staircase without comment.

The order's library is closed on the day following any ratification by the Chronurgy Guild of a new application of temporal energy, a closure observed without announcement and discovered only by those who arrive.

Present Status

The Horologists of the Seventh Turn continue to share purview over the Cyclical Calendars and to submit annual inventories to the Guild of Horologists. The Seventh Metalwrights maintain the order's seals. No expedition has confirmed whether the thirty-seventh turn of Spiral Staircase Omega contains further unrecorded doors, though the Clearing of the Seventh Recess is held by the Seventh Revision Concordancetwelfth to be the outermost such space.
