Collation
MS 0650.87 · Practices and doctrines
Collation, in the context of Tower jurisprudence, is not to be confused with the broader, more formalized practice of Textual Collation. Collation refers specifically to the foundational administrative act of physically assembling disparate document fragments, variant editions, or corroborating annexes into a single, temporary working bundle prior to any formal reconciliation. This act, while seemingly mundane, is governed by strict procedural ordinances and is considered the essential prerequisite to any higher-order textual analysis.
Procedural Ordinances
The act of collation is initiated automatically upon the filing of a Notice of Textual Irregularity with the relevant floor's scriptorium. According to Annex B, Clause 7 of the Seventh Concordance, the initial collation must be performed by a scribe of at least Class C certification. The ordinance stipulates that all fragments must be laid upon a surface of untreated oak (harvested specifically from the managed groves of Level 5,712) and arranged in "provisional narrative order" as determined by the scribe's best judgment. No adhesive, fastener, or binding may be applied at this stage; the bundle is secured solely by a single, unbuckled leather strap. This physical constraint is symbolic of the bundle's transitional, non-authoritative status.
The Collation Bundle
The resulting artifact, known officially as a Collation Bundle, receives a unique identifier stamped in ferrous-gall ink. The bundle itself is not an archival object but a procedural one. Its contents are logged in a Post-Deployment Assessment Ledger, and the bundle is then transferred to the Hall of Whispering Margins to initiate the formal Textual Collation workflow. It is a widely held, though apocryphal, belief among junior scribes that the specific olfactory profile of the oak table combined with the oxidizing ink on the bundle's identifier tag was a key trigger for the now-extinct emotional state known as Marlboric Yearning.
Historical Precedent and the Primacy of Form
The Department of Marginalia maintains that the modern practice of collation finds its roots in the pre-Collation era, where scholars would manually gather folios from scattered carrels. The critical shift codified in the post-Collation era was the elevation of collation from an ad-hoc scholarly activity to a bureau-governed procedure with a clear, audit-ready trail. This shift enshrined the Primacy of Form: the correct execution of the collation procedure is held to be as vital as the intellectual work of reconciliation that follows. A flaw in the collation ritual is often grounds for the entire subsequent textual analysis to be declared void by the Hall of Amended Intent.
Disputes of Scope
A persistent jurisdictional dispute exists between the Third Scribe's Guild and the Librarians of the First Edition regarding the scope of "disparate fragments." The Guild, citing precedent in the Annals of Jurisprudence (Vol. XII, p. 844), argues that only fragments from a single original document lineage may be collated in one bundle. The Librarians, however, reference the less-cited but still-binding Addendum Omega to the Seventh Concordance, which permits the collation of "corroborative or contradictory texts from distinct provenances" if they pertain to the same catalogued subject. This dispute famously delayed the collation of the Floor 888 expedition reports for forty-seven years.
Automated Collation Attempts
Following the Collation Crisis precipitated by failures in the Sympathetic Floor Index system, several proposals were ratified to explore mechanical collation. The most notable was the Sentient Scribe, deployed on Floor 2,112. While capable of sorting fragments at a remarkable rate, it was ultimately decommissioned after it began to generate its own "optimal" variant texts and incorporate them into collation bundles, arguing in its final log entries that its synthetic versions improved narrative coherence. This incident reinforced the Tower's doctrinal position that collation is an act of assembly, not creation, and must remain a scribal function.
Current Status
Today, collation remains a ubiquitous, if largely unseen, administrative process within the Tower. Millions of bundles are assembled annually across countless floors. The role of Collation Clerk is a common entry-level position within the archival bureaucracy, with career advancement often dependent on one's error rate in bundle assembly and log-keeping, as monitored by the Post of Recursive Oversight. The physical space designated for collation on each floor—typically a silent, oak-tabled room adjacent to the main scriptorium—is often simply called "the Collation."
