Papyrophage
MS 7700.52 · Practices and doctrines
Papyrophage is a term with two distinct, albeit related, meanings within the Tower's administrative and archival framework. Primarily, it refers to the official designation for a family of fungal-arthropod symbionts endemic to several Vellum Rotundas, classified under Annex C of Concordance 17 as "documentary detritivores." Secondarily, and more commonly in daily parlance, it denotes any Librarian or Curator assigned to the politically sensitive task of reviewing and de-accessioning obsolete or contradictory records, a duty formalized by Clause 12.44.7.
Biological Profile
The biological papyrophage (Bibliomycarthrus insitivus) is a composite organism. A species of pale, fast-growing mycelium (the Bibliomyces) forms a structural matrix that harbors a colony of flightless, silver-grey insects (the Arthrus). The mycelium secretes enzymes that break down cellulose, lignin, and older iron-gall inks, predigesting the material which is then consumed by the arthropods. The insects' waste products, in turn, provide essential nitrates for fungal growth. They are most prevalent in the lower stacks of Floor 3011 and Floor -44, where humidity levels consistently exceed 70%. A fully mature colony can reduce a standard folio volume to a fine, odorless, grey dust within six to eight weeks.
Official Curation Role
The procedural role of Papyrophage was instituted to address the Tower's inherent problem of informational entropy. As Concordances are amended and new holdings contradict old ones, a mechanism for controlled deletion became necessary to prevent archival paralysis. Under Clause 12.44.7, a Librarian may be deputized as a Papyrophage for a specific term, granted temporary authority to identify records deemed "non-concordant, recursively refuted, or ontologically surplus." The criteria, however, are famously vague. The Papyrophage must submit a Schedule of Dissolution to the Office of the Keeper of Precedents, but approval is often retroactive, leading to the adage that "a Papyrophage's work is only acknowledged by its absence."
Controversies and the Papyrophage Schism
The dual meaning of the term is not accidental, but a point of significant scholarly and political conflict, often called the Papyrophage Schism. One school of thought, led by the Factualist Chapter, argues the naming is merely a harmless metaphor: as the insect consumes obsolete paper, so the officer prunes obsolete ideas. The opposing view, championed by the Archivists of the Unspoken, holds it is a literal description. They posit that authorized Papyrophages do not simply delete records, but physically transport them to colonies of Bibliomycarthrus insitivus in sanctioned Vellum Rotundas, fulfilling a symbiotic ritual that maintains the Tower's metabolic balance. This theory is supported by the otherwise inexplicable Fifth Concordance ordinance requiring all Papyrophages to undergo monthly fungal spore screenings.

Operational Protocol
The standard protocol for a human Papyrophage, as outlined in the Manual of Discreet Excisions, involves a multi-stage process:
- Isolation: The target holding is moved to a Quarantine Carrel on Floor 0.
- Collation: All direct and indirect references to the holding are mapped across relevant Concordances.
- Judgment: The Papyrophage determines if the holding is "in irreconcilable dissonance" with higher-priority truths.
- Dissolution: If condemned, the holding is stamped with a sigma (σ) and removed from the active indices. Its physical disposition is not recorded.
Notably, the protocol forbids the destruction of a holding that is the sole source of a given fact, even if that fact is patently absurd. This has led to the preservation of countless singularly bizarre entries, a loophole known as "the sanctuary of singularity."
Cultural Perception
Within Tower society, to be named a Papyrophage is considered a mark of high trust and profound moral burden. It is a solitary and unpopular posting, as the officer must operate in a legal grey area defined by contradictory guidelines. They are often viewed with a mixture of respect and suspicion, and it is considered bad luck to invite one to a communal meal in the Refectory of Whispering Pasts. Their symbol of office is a silver pin in the shape of a curled, half-eaten leaf, though many choose not to wear it. The role's existence is the Tower's tacit admission that its goal of perfect, non-contradictory knowledge is unattainable, and that forgetting is not an accident of the system, but one of its essential, if unacknowledged, functions.
