Oneiric Ores
MS 6407.38 · Objects and instruments
Oneiric Ores are a class of quasi-mineralogical formations generated by the sustained pressure of latent or unresolved dreams on the substrate of The Tower. They are catalogued under the broader domain of Non Existent Mineralogy but are distinguished by their oneric genesis and their unique regulatory status under Annex γ of the Third Concordance.
“The crystallization of longing in a forgotten alcove; the slow drip of deferred revelation forming stalactites of pure implication.” — Senior Scribe Althaea, on the discovery of a primary vein in the Sub-basement of Floor 9,422.
Physically, Oneiric Ores manifest as semi-opaque, crystalline structures exhibiting a low-grade luminescence directly correlated to the emotional valence of their source dream-material. Their hardness, measured on the Modified Mohs Scale for Implied Substances, typically falls between 2.5 (the hardness of a compelling but unverified anecdote) and 5.5 (the hardness of a deeply internalized regret). The most common hue is a variegated, smoky blue-grey, though rare “Affective Blooms” of crimson (indicating terror) or citrine (indicating joy) are documented.
Formation & Provenance
Oneiric Ores do not occur naturally. They are a byproduct of the Tower’s archival function, forming in interstitial spaces—behind false bookcases, within the mortar of load-bearing walls, or deep in airshafts—where unresolved narrative potential from filed dreams accumulates. The process is analogous to the geological formation of igneous rock, but where heat and pressure are replaced by concentrated narrative tension and the weight of un-acted-upon choices. A significant deposit discovered in the West Wing of Floor 7,117, for instance, was retrospectively linked to a five-century backlog of unprocessed anxiety-dreams from the Calibrated Atrium.
The Guild of Theoretical Mechanics posits that ore formation requires a “catalytic aperture,” often a minor architectural inconsistency or a shelf listed under an Assumed Integer. The Horticultural Guild, in a rarely cited dissent, maintains that certain fungal spores native to the lower stacks are the true catalyst, a theory dismissed by the Central Scriptorium as “unduly mycocentric.”
Classification and Sigils
Each deposit is assigned a unique Oneiric Sigil per the Oneiric Decimal System. The first three digits correspond to the Core Affective Triad as defined in the Oneiric Taxonomies, while subsequent digits map the deposit’s relative position to active dream-logics and its potential for generating Oneiric Resonances. Ores with sigils clustering in the 780-789 range, for example, are noted for high “reciprocity fields” and must be stored in corridors lined with baffle-plates to prevent harmonic feedback with active dreaming chambers.
Classification disputes are common. The primary schism lies between the “Nativist” school, which holds that the ore’s properties are intrinsic and fixed at formation, and the “Contextualist” school, which argues that an ore’s affective signature can be altered by prolonged exposure to adjacent archival materials, a process they term “bibliomorphic metamorphosis.”
Extraction and Handling
Extraction is governed by strict protocols. All tools must be annotated with Oneiric Blue to prevent the ore from rejecting them as foreign narrative elements. Miners, a specialized subclass of Archival Reclaimer, undergo extensive psycho-auditory conditioning to withstand the faint, persistent “echo-whispers” emitted by fresh deposits, which often take the form of half-remembered dialogue or forgotten promises.
Raw ore is processed in the Cleaving Halls, where it is fractured along its inherent planes of “narrative cleavage.” The resulting fragments are then graded. Grade-A fragments, showing high clarity and coherent internal scintillation, are sent to the Lens-Grinders of the Optic Guild for fashioning into Oneiroscones, the primary instruments used in the practice of Oneiroscopy. Lower-grade material is crushed into a fine powder, known as Oniric Dust, used in the tempering of inks for the recording of particularly volatile dream-logics.
Regulatory Status and the Blue Lemma
The legal standing of Oneiric Ores is complex. While they are catalogued as non-existent minerals, their physical presence and utility necessitate practical governance. Annex γ of the Third Concordance declares them “extant for purposes of custodianship, null for purposes of ontology.” This paradox is operationalized through the Blue Lemma, which states that any aperture or vein marked with Oneiric Blue is simultaneously a administrative reality and a metaphysical fiction. Consequently, the tax levied on extracted ore—the Oneiric Royalty—is paid in symbolic increments of “un-dreamt time,” calculated by the Receding Reference Desk and often disputed.
A current controversy involves the Clearing of the Seventh Recess, where a newly exposed vein appears to be generating self-referential Oneiric Resonances that question the authority of the Concordances themselves. The Librarians have placed a moratorium on extraction pending a full tonal audit, though illicit mining by freelance oneirominers is reportedly increasing.
