Calculi Formations
MS 0468.80 · Practices and doctrines
Calculi Formations are agglomerated mineral bodies precipitated around documented grievances, and are the only lithic class in Non Existent Mineralogy whose growth can be predicted from the archival record rather than from the surrounding strata. A Calculi Formation begins as a nucleus of unaddressed complaint — a misfiled petition, a disputed queue position, an unanswered requisition — and accretes in successive laminations for as long as the grievance remains open. Formations are measured in recensions, one recension being the thickness added by a single unanswered filing. The largest reliably measured specimen, the Grievance of the Fourth Landing, stands at 411 recensions and is expected to close before the end of the current catalogue cycle.
Composition and Growth
The nucleus of a Calculi Formation is invariably documentary. Analysis of 2,300 specimens by the Librarian-Assayer Ilenne Marrow, published as On the Accretion of Complaint (Floor 88, Scriptorium 6, 14 pp.), established that formation does not occur around grievances that were never written down. An unwritten complaint disperses; a written one hardens. Once the nucleus is fixed, each further unanswered memorandum deposits a lamina of calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, and trace indignation, the last of which is measurable but has no known use.
Growth rates vary with the rank of the office receiving the unanswered filing. Petitions lodged with the Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance accrete fastest, averaging 9.4 recensions per cycle, owing to that Bureau's practice of acknowledging receipt twice and replying never. Grievances directed to the Ebon Legions accrete almost not at all; the Legions answer everything within a day, which is why only eleven Calculi Formations have been recorded on military floors and all of them concern the answering itself.
Calculi Formations are readily distinguished from the Uricite Stalactites with which they are sometimes confused in dark stairwells: uricite hangs from the ceiling and precipitates from traffic, whereas calculi rise from the floor and precipitate from correspondence.
Relation to Other Formations
The class sits awkwardly among the Tower's lithic holdings. It is not a Corbel Forest, though neglected formations sometimes develop a botanical margin where filings have sprouted marginalia. It is not a Silent-Stone, though a formation will absorb sound once its outer laminae have cured, which is why grievance chambers are quiet. It is not an Oneiric Ore, because the grievance must be awake and on file. The distinction from Proto-Silvanus Aggregates was settled only in the winter of the year the Tower recorded as 3,011, when the Assayers' Bench ruled that a formation with an unresolved complaint at its core is calculine regardless of what grows on it, and that anything else is provisional.
Salt Grottoe specialists have claimed that certain Salt Grottoes of the Salt Flats of Floor 44 are merely calculi that have forgotten their paperwork. The Assayers' Bench has declined to hear the claim on the grounds that it was filed in the wrong form, and the resulting formation at the Bench's own threshold now stands at 62 recensions.
Dispute Between the Concordances
Ownership of Calculi Formations is contested. The Third Concordance, Annex 9, holds that a formation belongs to the office that received the original complaint, on the reasoning that the office caused it. Annex Δ-12 of the Second Concordance assigns formations to the complainant, on the reasoning that the complainant supplied the material. Both annexes are cited daily and neither has been withdrawn.
"A formation is the property of the party who first declined to answer, and thereafter of no one, since no one has answered."
— Third Concordance, Annex 9, clause 4
The practical consequence is that a formation may be claimed twice and maintained by neither. The disputed formation in the east stair of Floor 1,204 has been repainted with two different claim-marks every quarter since its founding and has grown 38 recensions from the repainting alone.
Notable Formations
An inventory of the four formations most often consulted:
- The Grievance of the Fourth Landing — 411 recensions; nucleus a requisition for a chair, submitted and unanswered in the year of the Fourth Audit. The chair was never supplied. The formation is now used as a chair.
- The Marrow Specimen — 6 recensions; retained by the Assayers' Bench as the type specimen, following Assayer Marrow's own unanswered request that it be catalogued.
- The Queue Stone — 147 recensions; formed beside the Central Index Column from a dispute over standing order, and now the only object in the queue that has never moved.
- The Unanswered Annex — extent unmeasured; a formation grown entirely around the missing pages of a recension of the Crystal Codex, and therefore uncataloguable by the usual method.
Maintenance and Closure
Formations cease growing when the underlying grievance is formally resolved, at which point they cure within eleven days and may be entered in the ordinary mineral register. Closure is rare. Of the 2,300 specimens surveyed by Marrow, 71 had been closed, and of those, 68 had been closed by the death of every party involved, which the Bench does not count as resolution but does count as closure.
Clerks are reminded that a formation may not be used to shelve books, to brace a door, or to hold a place in line. The prohibition dates to a notice of the Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance (Notice 1,902) issued after a formation at the Fifth Spiral Watercourse was used to dam a channel and subsequently filed a grievance of its own. That formation is still growing and is expected to outlast the channel.
Floor sweepers are instructed to dust around formations and not to read them.
