Numinous Ore

MS 0263.19 · Objects and instruments

Numinous Ore is the designation given to a class of catalytic mineral deposits recovered from the upper reliquary shafts of Floor 1,124, notable for its refusal to settle into a fixed crystalline state outside the presence of a recorded voice. First catalogued during the interim administration of the Intransigent Materialists, Numinous Ore remains the only ore within the Tower whose mass is routinely measured in syllables rather than stoneweights.

Discovery and Early Catalogue

The initial vein was identified in Year 774 by Sub-Scribe Ollen Vext, who noted that the deposit "sang when the lamp was withdrawn, and sulked when it was not" (Annex Δ-12 of the Second Concordance, Recension 3, Clause 9). Vext's log was later disputed by Senior Scribe Althaea, who maintained that the phenomenon belonged properly to Oneiric Ores and that the Numinous vein was a mislabelled offshoot of the primary deposit she had documented at the Silvanus voids. The disagreement was tabled without resolution under Third Concordance, which observes only that "the dispute concerning priority of the Numinous singing shall not impede the quarterly tally" (Third Concordance, Addendum 12).

Following the dissolution of the Intransigent Materialists in Year 819, custody of the Numinous shafts passed to the Guild of Metallurgists, who promptly sub-leased processing rights to the Lampwrights' Guild under a provision later upheld by Precedence Edict 5/2. The First Edict of Lamps was cited as authoritative, though the Edict makes no mention of singing ores and the Librarians have refused to issue a clarifying seal.

Physical and Acoustic Properties

Numinous Ore occurs as a loosely coherent suspension that hardens only when a sustained utterance of no fewer than fourteen syllables is directed at it by a registered clerk. The Guild of Theoretical Mechanics has argued that this requires a "catalytic aperture" analogous to that proposed for standard ore formation, and has petitioned the Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance to recognise the human mouth as a Fifth Spiral hydraulic event. The petition was denied on the grounds that "a mouth is not a watercourse, even when moist" (Fifth Spiral Watercourse, Marginalia 2).

Each consignment is assigned a unique Oneiric Decimal System sigil at the point of extraction. Failed castings are returned to the raw veins of Aperture 119-X per the method detailed in Third Concordance, Addendum 12, though Numinous returns have historically resisted re-integration and are presently stored as silent discoids on Floor 2190.

Administrative Disputes

The Calculi Formations office contests the metallurgists' claim that Numinous Ore is fundamentally distinct from the deposits of Renal Rapids, arguing that both exhibit "aqueous reluctance" under similar lamp conditions. The Nephritic Stair commission has counter-argued that the Rapids material lacks the requisite vocal dependency and that the comparison undermines the integrity of the Font of Lost Quotations, where Numinous shards are used to amplify recovered text.

A further contradiction arises between Third Concordance and the recensions of Floor 5,307, the latter asserting that Numinous Ore was first encountered not at Floor 1,124 but during the Folly Expedition of Year 812 near Floor 1201. The expedition's lone surviving inventory lists "one crate, humming, contents unverified," which the Librarians have ruled insufficient for precedence.

Handling and Storage

Transit of Numinous Ore between floors requires a cantor in continuous employment for not less than six Tower-years. The Folly Expedition of Year 812 is frequently cited as cautionary: its cantor resigned mid-stair at the Nephritic Stair, and the accompanying ore reverted to suspension before reaching Floor 1201.

Clerks assigned to the Numinous Gallery are prohibited from whistling, as the resulting harmonic overlap has been shown to displace sigils in the Oneiric Decimal System by as many as three indices. The restriction is printed on the gallery's inner door but not on its outer door.

Scholarly Disagreement

The central unresolved question concerns whether Numinous Ore is a true mineral or a deferred acoustic event. The Guild of Theoretical Mechanics holds the former view, citing the catalytic aperture doctrine; the Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance favours the latter, noting that the ore's mass "arrives after the sound and leaves before the silence" (Bureau of Hydraulic Concordance, Circular 17). Third Concordance declines to adjudicate, stating only that "both positions are recorded, and recording is catalogue enough" (Third Concordance, Main Body, Clause 1). The Librarians have sealed the matter pending the return of the Folly Expedition of Year 812, which the archive notes departed in Year 812 and has not yet submitted a final report.
