Office of Dimensional Integrity
MS 2989.12 · Guilds, orders and offices
Office of Dimensional Integrity (ODI) is the former designation for a regulatory bureau, now formally known as the Anomaly Containment Division, which operates within the Office of Archival Integrity. It was the primary authority responsible for maintaining the structural and conceptual boundaries between catalogued realities, particularly concerning the phenomenon of dimensional incursion and leakage between non-adjacent floors.
History and Mandate
The Office of Dimensional Integrity was first constituted under Clause 7 of Concordance 3,891, "On the Securement of Ontological Edges." Its original mandate was to develop and enforce protocols for the isolation of unstable or "adhærent" archival subjects—those demonstrating a propensity to affect the physical or temporal parameters of their assigned holdings. The Office’s most notable documented intervention was its oversight of the Great Transposition of Floor 70,203, an event requiring a full procedural reboot to contain a cascading failure in localized causality. Following a jurisdictional consolidation detailed in Concordance 14,742, which also established the Office of Dimensional Liaison, the ODI was formally renamed and subsumed as a division under the broader purview of the Office of Archival Integrity, though its core functions remain largely unchanged.
Core Functions
The Division’s operations are segmented into three primary directorates:
- Containment Audit: Conducts periodic reviews, known as Aperture Censuses, to verify the dimensional stability and bracket integrity of all Standard Apertures (e.g., doorways, archways, and transitional mirrors). This work is closely coordinated with the Bureau of Metrical Integrity.
- Transit Oversight: Responsible for certifying vertical and lateral conduits, such as Stairwell 44, against the parameters set forth by the Office of Dimensional Standards. This includes monitoring for breaches of the Tolerance for Dimensional Drift.
- Event Response: Manages active incursions and coordinates with the Bureau of Dimensional Reconciliation for post-event Physical Verification of affected holdings to ensure catalogued items have not exchanged properties with their containers.
Instrumentation and Protocol
The Division employs several specialized tools calibrated to Tower-specific constants. The Caliper of Dimensional Constancy is used to measure adherence to canonical spatial descriptions, while the Thaumic Gradient Spectrograph maps residual conceptual resonance. All containment procedures must be approved by the Spiral Integrity Oversight Panel prior to implementation, as per the Spire Integrity Protocols. Furthermore, the Division maintains a permanent liaison office with the Office of Acoustic Integrity, as sonic phenomena are a frequent vector for dimensional permeability.
Jurisdictional Disputes
The Office’s history is marked by ongoing jurisdictional overlaps. Concordance 8,302 ostensibly granted the Office of Ontological Integrity supreme authority over matters of existential coherence, which several scholars argue renders the Dimensional Integrity mandate redundant. However, Concordance 11,455, Amendment Delta, explicitly carves out an exception for "spatially manifest anomalies," preserving the Division’s role. This has led to a protracted bureaucratic cold war, particularly in cases involving floors like Floor 33, whose non-standard dimensional stability is surveyed by the Bureau of Metrical Integrity but whose ontological classification falls to another office. The Office of Ceremonial Integrity has filed seventeen petitions for arbitration on this matter, all currently pending.
Notable Assessments
The Division’s quarterly ledgers, while largely redacted, include declassified abstracts of significant interventions. A recurrent entry concerns the so-called "Whispering Gallery" incident on Sub-Basement Theta, where the dimensions of a reading room began to correlate precisely with the vocal range of a patron reading a treatise on non-Euclidean grief. The Division’s report concluded the incident was contained within the established Tolerance for Dimensional Drift, though the Office of the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity filed a dissenting opinion citing "unacceptable harmonic strain." Such inter-office disagreements are standard and are filed as annexes to the primary report, forming a substantial secondary literature on the practical limits of archival integrity.
