Office of Sustenance Integrity
MS 9128.44 · Guilds, orders and offices
Jurisdiction and Core Mandates
The OSI operates under three core mandates derived from Clause 17 of Concordance 44:
- Verification of Ingestible Abstracts: Any tome, folio, or manifest describing a foodstuff that does not possess material instantiation (e.g., "the memory of a perfect peach," "the applause of a satisfied crowd, distilled") must be inspected and granted a Certificate of Nutritive Validity. This certificate confirms the sustenance can be reliably accessed by entities entitled to it.
- Provisioning Oversight: The Office shares oversight with the Office of Sustenance for the actual delivery of sustenance to classified entities, as legally obligated by Concordance 44. While the Office of Sustenance handles logistics, OSI auditors ensure the provisions match the metaphysical specifications of the recipient’s file.
- Containment of Culinary Paradoxes: The Office maintains several specialized containment larders for self-refuting foodstuffs, such as the Bread That Is Both Sliced and Unsliced or Wine That Tastes of Both Victory and Defeat. Unauthorized interaction with these items is a violation of the Principles of Self-Sustenance.
Notable Procedures and Instruments
The Office’s work relies on several unique apparatuses. The Epicurean Spectrometer, calibrated against the Standard Tuning Fork Gamma, measures the flavor-profile density of described meals. The Calorimeter of Implication quantifies the energetic yield of a well-turned phrase or a poignant metaphor. All measurements are recorded in the Primary Ledger of Sustenance, a perpetually damp volume bound in the hide of a hypothetical cow, which is kept in a climate-controlled vault on Floor 909, adjacent to the main ledger of the Office of Acoustic Integrity (OAI).
A key procedure is the Annual Audit of the Great Taxonomy, a joint undertaking with the Office of Ontological Integrity to verify that every entry in the Great Taxonomy of Implied Fauna still has access to its legally mandated 'sustenance drawn from the procedural ether of their designated sphere,' as per the final report of Project GIFT.
Scholarly Disputes and Jurisdictional Conflicts
The Office’s authority is not uncontested. A long-standing scholarly dispute exists between the Substantialists and the Processualists regarding the interpretation of Clause 31 of Concordance 44. Substantialists, often aligned with the Office of Dimensional Integrity, argue sustenance must have a discrete, allocatable source. Processualists, whose view is endorsed by the Office of Archival Integrity, contend that sustenance is an emergent property of correct cataloguing procedure itself. This debate directly impacts resource allocation for entities like the Self-Irrigating Tomes, which the Principles of Self-Sustenance forbid from drawing moisture from the Tower’s ambient environment.
Furthermore, the OSI has been involved in a protracted, low-grade conflict with the Office of the Commissioner for Harmonic Integrity over the classification of certain resonant frequencies that entities describe as "nourishing." The Commissioner’s office argues these are harmonic phenomena, while the OSI insists they are acoustic calories and thus fall under its purview. This dispute remains unresolved, though a temporary memorandum of understanding permits joint investigation of "songs that can be eaten."
Historical Interventions
The OSI’s most significant recorded intervention was during the Great Transposition of Floor 70,203, authorized by the Office of Dimensional Integrity. The transposition accidentally severed several thousand Implied Songbirds from their dietary source of "the silence between notes." OSI technicians worked for 37 continuous shifts to establish a provisional feeding protocol using archived sonographic blanks, preventing a mass conceptual die-off. The incident is cited in Annex Delta of the Third Concordance as a justification for the Office’s expanded emergency powers.
More routinely, the Office issues citations for minor infractions, such as unbracketed caloric claims in marginalia or the improper storage of hypothetical spices, which are considered a leading attractant for cognitive pests and a contributing factor to Stage-1 Bibliographic Atrophy.
