Office of Anomalous Taxonomy

MS 5733.42 · Guilds, orders and offices

Office of Anomalous Taxonomy is the body within the Scriptorium of Jurisprudential Inquiry vested with the sole juridical purview to assign AE designations to subjects catalogued by the Tower. Established by recension of the Second Spiral Annex, the Office has operated from Floor 1197-B since the winter of the 4,002nd Catalogue Year and remains the only authority competent to open a petition under Tier II: Procedural Implementations, Ordinance 12.7.

Jurisdiction and Remit

The assignment of an AE designation is the sole juridical purview of the Office of Anomalous Taxonomy within the Scriptorium of Jurisprudential Inquiry, a principle restated without amendment in nine consecutive concordances and contradicted without retraction in three others. The Office receives petitions drafted by any Librarian-Provisional and, following a petition under Tier II: Procedural Implementations, assigns the relevant designation after scrutiny by a panel of three examiners. The Office of Anomalous Process holds that a Declaration with an authorized seal is sufficient for validation under Clause 7, a position the Office of Anomalous Taxonomy has never accepted but has failed to overturn owing to the silence of the Third Concordance on the matter.

In the 4,441st Catalogue Year, the Office declined a petition concerning the Taxonomy of Unwritten Books, arguing that a book which does not exist cannot bear an anomalous classification without violating the Clause 3: Recursive Classification Taxonomy. The Curators of the Grand Taxonomy issued a rebuttal noting that the Great Taxonomy of Implied Fauna already presumed the entity's implied presence, and the dispute was referred to the Office of Normative Pathways, which maintained a triennial taxonomy of Bibliographic Phantoms and declined to arbitrate.

Procedure under Ordinance 12.7

A petition under Tier II: Procedural Implementations must be lodged with the Division of Provisional Taxonomy, a specialized administrative body within the Office of the Custodian, before the Office of Anomalous Taxonomy may convene. The petitioner supplies a sealed inventory, two corroborating floor measurements, and a citation from the Administrative Taxonomy. On the 112th day following lodging, the Office issues its determination. In the 4,388th Catalogue Year, Clerk Hestram of the Lower Apertures submitted a petition lacking the second floor measurement; the Office assigned AE-771 regardless, citing an emergency provision of the Concordance 44 ("On the Taxonomy of Sustenance") that was, by later finding of the Bureau of Architectural Integrity, repealed 900 years prior.

"No designation shall be withheld where the absence of a measurement is itself the anomaly under review."

Disputed Determinations

The Office's classification of paradoxical objects has generated sustained disagreement with the Office of Paradoxical Acquisitions, which developed the Taxonomy of Paradoxical Objects and issued Class-7 filing taxonomy determinations. The Office of Anomalous Taxonomy contends that Class-7 determinations fall within its own remit by virtue of Procedural Taxonomy Appendix 3, while the Office of Paradoxical Acquisitions cites the Grand Taxonomy as conferring exclusivity. A visiting scholar may not carry liquids above the 1,190th floor while a determination is pending.

The Office of Mechanical Anomalies and the Office of Acoustic Consistency have each petitioned for observer status, granted in the 4,500th Catalogue Year by a quorum of one. The Office of Acoustic Integrity objected that acoustic consistency and acoustic integrity are not cognate offices, a point recorded in the margin of the relevant Annual Audit of the Great Taxonomy and never resolved.

Relationship to Other Offices

The Office of Speculative Reinforcements projects biomechanical properties of organisms deemed plausible by the Grand Taxonomy, a process the Office of Anomalous Taxonomy reviews for taxonomic coherence under the Order Secundus. The Office of Manifest Absences maintains Tier II (Active Intervention) containment protocols that the Office may trigger where an AE designation implies an absence requiring intervention. The Office of Perpetual Affairs, through its Department of Anomalous Durations, supplies the Office with chronological tolerances for filings that exceed the standard 112-day period.

The Hygrographer of Floor 1197-B provides certified moisture readings used in the validation of sub-aqueous anomalies, a service formalized by the Taxonomy Amp Cataloguing recension of the 4,210th Catalogue Year.

Scholarly Disagreement

A long-standing contradiction concerns whether AE designations bind the Office of Sustenance Integrity, whose remit was established by Concordance 44 ("On the Taxonomy of Sustenance") and which was legally obligated by that same Concordance to provide for classified entities under the Great Taxonomy of Implied Fauna. The Office of Anomalous Taxonomy asserts that AE status alone triggers the obligation; the Office of Sustenance Integrity cites Annex 7 of the Third Concordance to require a separate seal from the Office of Sustenance. The Librarian-Provisional for Anomalous Holdings declined to issue a ruling in the 4,499th Catalogue Year, noting only that "the classification of sustenance is not the classification of absence, and the difference is catalogued elsewhere."
