Office of Paradoxical Acquisitions

MS 6070.75 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Office of Paradoxical Acquisitions (commonly abbreviated OPA) is a semi-autonomous bureau nested within the Office of Acquisitions Amp Stasis and charged with the custodial procurement of items whose existence is, by definition, impossible. It operates under the direct auspices of the Warden of Silent Acquisitions and is governed by the First Paradoxical Provision (Concordance 88-A), which grants it "the mandate to acquire that which cannot be acquired, and to catalogue that which resists all known classification."

The Office's foundational principle, as articulated in its charter, is that an object's paradoxical nature does not preclude its physical presence within the Tower; it merely complicates the paperwork. Its work is considered distinct from, though occasionally intersecting with, the operations of the Department of Anticipatory Acquisitions and the Bureau of Curatorial Acquisitions.

Operational Mandate & Acquisition Pathways

The OPA is responsible for three primary acquisition pathways, each with its own sub-registry. The first is the Retroactive Procurement of objects that were conclusively proven never to have existed, typically sourced from the archives of the Department of Anticipatory Acquisitions. The second is Ontological Salvage, recovering artifacts from conceptual spaces that have collapsed, such as the Impossible Coastlines of Floor 2002. The third and most complex is Paradox-Driven Manifestation, wherein an object is generated by the sustained logical contradiction between two or more Unclosed Loops.

All procured items must be logged in the Ledger of Partial Acquisitions under a provisional designation, pending final review. This ledger famously includes entries for objects of which only one property was acquired (e.g., "the weight of a forgotten promise," "the scent of a square circle").

The Tripartite Dossier & Cartesian Speculists

A key procedural innovation of the OPA is the tripartite dossier, a requirement for authorizing the creation of a Cartesian Speculist. As per Annex Gamma to Concordance 88-A, this dossier must contain: 1) a Notarized Statement of Impossibility from the originating floor's senior archivist; 2) a Contradiction Impact Assessment forecasting the object's effect on local causality; and 3) a Procurement Pathway Variance, filed in triplicate with the Office of Acquisitions & Stasis. Only upon the Warden's approval of this dossier can a Speculist be commissioned to physically "imagine" the item into a state of provisional tangibility.

The Taxonomy of Paradoxical Objects

In AY 734, the OPA formally ratified the Taxonomy of Paradoxical Objects, a comprehensive framework for classifying impossible acquisitions. The Taxonomy delineates seven primary classes, including Autocognitive Artifacts (objects that perceive their own impossibility), Recursive Voids, and Contradictory Substantives. The development of this taxonomy was instrumental in formalizing the theoretical principles of Paradoxical Cartography. Notably, the system relies heavily on the concept of paradoxical quanta, a unit of measurement first annotated by Archivist Ardis Vole.

Jurisdictional Conflicts & the Chen Discrepancy

The Office's work inevitably creates friction with other departments, particularly regarding jurisdiction over items that transition from "paradoxical" to "merely improbable." The most famous such conflict is the Chen Discrepancy of AY 812. Archivist Kael's query regarding a self-referential catalogue was filed with the Office of Acquisitions & Stasis, which triggered a cascade of contradictory precedents across seventeen sub-clauses of Concordance 117. The dispute, which concerned whether a paradox that cites its own acquisition form is an administrative artifact or an acquisition target, remains technically unresolved. A standing moratorium prevents its re-adjudication, leaving the item in question—a ledger that lists itself as its only entry—in a state of permanent provisional custody.

Preventative Protocols & Anticipatory Entries

To mitigate Paradox Contamination and pre-empt ontological feedback loops, the OPA mandates the filing of anticipatory entries with the Office of Acquisitions & Stasis. These are placeholder records for objects predicted to manifest via Predictive Modelling, filed before any physical acquisition attempt is made. This protocol is designed to prevent the catastrophic scenario wherein two departments independently file acquisition requests for the same impossible object, thereby creating a duplicate paradox. The efficacy of this system is a matter of ongoing scholarly debate, as it relies on the paradoxical assumption that one can formally request an item that, at the time of the request, does not exist in any coherent state.

Current Status & Holdings

As of the last published inventory (AY 901), the OPA maintains custody of an estimated 3,447 fully realized paradoxical objects, with a further 11,209 items listed in the Register of Irregular Acquisitions under "perpetual pending" status. Its headquarters are rumored to occupy a non-sequential set of chambers on Floors 734, 88-A, and a third floor whose number is itself a classified paradox. All requests for acquisition, consultation, or dispute resolution must be submitted through the Register of Standing Requests, citing the relevant sub-clause of the First Paradoxical Provision.
