Metaphorical School
MS 7802.87 · Practices and doctrines
The Metaphorical School is one of the principal interpretative traditions within the Tower, concerned with the analysis of figurative language as literal administrative fact. It contends that metaphors, similes, and analogies found within the Concordances and other foundational texts are not merely descriptive but constitute binding operational directives. The School's influence is most directly observed in the maintenance of Metaphorical Supports and the jurisdictional authority of bodies such as the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild and the Office of Metaphorical Literalism.
Core Tenets
Established by precedent rather than charter, the School operates on several axiomatic principles. The first is the Doctrine of Latent Infrastructure: any metaphorical structure described in an authoritative text implies a corresponding physical or procedural reality that must be catalogued and, if necessary, constructed. For instance, the phrase "a bridge of understanding" in Appendix Gamma-7 necessitated the survey and eventual stabilisation of the Splenic Swamp crossing, now officially designated Aperture 19-B. The second principle is the Principle of Contagious Literalism: once a metaphor is made literal in one context, all associated imagery within that document family must be similarly interpreted, leading to expansive projects such as the Inventory of Superfluous Supports.
A central, and often contentious, application of these tenets is the School's longstanding position on the Null Collective. The School contends the Collective is not a corporeal group but a rhetorical device representing Administrative Nihilism, a stance used primarily to counter proposals for bureaucratic expansion deemed "unfounded in the literal text."
Administrative Implementation
The practical work of the School is carried out through its associated administrative bodies. The Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild is responsible for the surveying and drafting of Cartae Metaphoricae, as well as the placement of Boundary Stelae as per the Protocol of Manifest Delineation. Their work frequently brings them into procedural tension with the Office of Metaphorical Literalism, which is charged with the application and enforcement of Clause 19 (Pertaining to Fixed Interpretations) within the context of Metaphorical Supports. A typical dispute involves the routing of pneumatic message tubes: the Guild argues routing is a cartographic function under its charter, while the Office insists it is a matter of literal conduit placement under its mandate.
Historically, the School's influence was consolidated under the Metaphorical Cartel, a now-dissolved administrative conglomerate of which the Guild of Unwritten Precedents was a key constituent. The Cartel was a principal contributor to the Protocol of Unitary Administration, which attempted, unsuccessfully, to codify metaphorical interpretation across all departments.
Scholarly Disputes and Rival Schools
The School's methodology is not without its critics. The Ontological School argues that the School mistakes linguistic convenience for ontological priority, cataloguing the "container" while ignoring the "contents." The Progressive Cartography School, in contrast, accepts the initial literalisation but argues for dynamic remapping, contesting the Guild's authority on matters of Preferential Routing and appealing to the Recursive Amendments Office. The Foundationalist School dismisses the entire endeavour as secondary to the study of the Tower's physical masonry, while the Sceptical School questions the very premise of a stable text to interpret.
Internal schisms also exist. A minority "Hard Literalist" faction within the Metaphorical School disputes the Guild's cataloguing work based on the Indexing Protocols for Non-Manifest Holdings, arguing that an unmapped metaphor cannot be said to exist, even provisionally. This faction often petitions the Office of Metaphorical Literalism to invoke Clause 3 (Regarding Unseen Imperatives) to force survey expeditions.
Notable Contributions to the Archive
The School's work has generated significant holdings. Beyond the aforementioned Inventory of Superfluous Supports, its scholars produced the definitive taxonomy distinguishing Metaphorical Flora from Phantasmal Flora. The career of Aethelred of the Unseen Corners, a 7th-cycle Guild surveyor, is extensively documented in their annals, particularly his failed expedition to chart the "ivory tower" mentioned in a marginal gloss to the Second Concordance. Furthermore, the School maintains a register of all disputes requiring Resolution Drafting where it is a named party, which currently spans seventeen volumes and is stored on Floor 14,304 (The Shelf of Perpetual Rebuttal).
Current Status and Jurisdiction
The Metaphorical School currently holds advisory seats on seven Concordance review committees. Its operational authority, however, is now diffuse, residing in the interstice between the Cartographers' Guild and the Office of Metaphorical Literalism. The dissolution of the Metaphorical Cartel has led to a more fragmented but persistent influence, with its interpretations often serving as the default position in administrative deadlock. As per the ruling in Dispute 44.7.09, the School's definitions are considered "provisionally binding" for all cataloguing purposes below Spiral 300, a ruling the Guild contests but continues to operate under.
