Appendix Gamma-7

MS 3194.32 · Documents and ordinances

Designation and Physical Description

Appendix Gamma-7 is the formal designation for the seventh appendix of the gamma series, a document of disputed extent, uncertain contents, and continuing administrative force. It is most commonly catalogued as a component of the Protocol of Manifest Delineation, though it was not drafted as part of that Protocol and was, by the account given in its own preamble, "received rather than written" (Protocol of Manifest Delineation, Preface to the Gamma Series). The received text was promulgated in Year 89 of the Second Chronology as a clasped appendix to the Fourth Concordance; it was sewn into its present position no later than Year 106, a change of binding that several recensions treat as a change of meaning.

In its current binding, Gamma-7 runs to eleven leaves, of which the seventh is blank on both sides and the eleventh carries no text but a single endorsement. It is bound in the standard manner described under Sewn Appendix, with the exception that the stitching passes through the margin rather than the gutter — a defect of the Fourth Librarianate's bindery, or according to the bindery, an intentional reading aid. Readers are asked not to attempt the margin themselves. The appendix is consulted by appointment, in the Gamma reading room, and may not be copied by hand; transcripts are issued by the Scriptorium and carry no standing.

Content and the Recognition of Metaphorical Supports

Appendix Gamma-7 is best known for Clause 3, which formally recognizes Metaphorical Supports as structural elements of the Tower rather than as figures of speech to be recorded and set aside. The clause is short, and its brevity has been the occasion of nearly all subsequent difficulty. It reads, in the Scriptorium's standard transcript:

"Where a support is described, and the description bears load, the support shall be treated as present, and the description as its specification."

— Appendix Gamma-7 of the Fourth Concordance, Clause 3

The Fourth Librarianate commissioned the Gamma-7 Instrument to operationalize this clause, and the Instrument's survey schedules remain the working standard in most stacks. The clause also played a key role in the establishment of the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild, whose founding petition cites it four times and misquotes it twice. The Guild's surveys are the principal authority on which Metaphorical Supports currently bear load in the eastern stack, and it is the Guild that maintains the running register of supports found to be bearing none.

The Question of Extent

There is no scholarly agreement on how much of the appendix is Gamma-7. The Librarianate's own collation recognizes eleven leaves. Concordance 89, promulgated exactly one century after the appendix, rendered most of its clauses "conditionally obsolete" and referred throughout to "the said appendix, its schedules and its retained matter" without ever enumerating the schedules. The Index of Superseded Clauses accordingly lists Gamma-7 with the status "Absent, Presumed Functional" — a formulation the Index has never used of any other holding, and one that its compilers have twice declined to amend.

The opposing position, associated with the cartographic reader Aman Sollow and pressed in her 1412 memorandum to the Guild, holds that the blank seventh leaf is original and that the appendix is therefore four leaves longer than it appears, the blank sections being "held" rather than "empty." Sollow's memorandum was accepted for filing and rejected for reading. The controversy surrounding the appendix's true contents is frequently classified under Divergent Loss, a category that until recently contained only shipping manifests.

Appendices Attached to the Appendix

Gamma-7 has acquired appendices of its own, a development the Fourth Librarianate has never formally permitted and has never prevented. Two are recorded. The first is Appendix Δ, sewn in the standard manner and consisting entirely of corrections to Gamma-7's marginalia. The second is Appendix Omega, originally attached to Annex Ω of the Fourteenth Concordance and later transferred, by a process no recension describes, to the same annex as The Whisper Appendix. Whether Omega belongs to Gamma-7 or merely to the annex that holds it is the substance of a dispute between the Scriptorium and the Guild that has outlasted three presiding Librarians.

The earlier histories of both appendices remain contested. The Lost Appendix of the Ninth Concordance is sometimes identified with Gamma-7 in the older catalogues, an identification the Index rejects without argument. The Phantom Appendix is likewise said by some to be Gamma-7 under a suppressed designation, a claim with no support beyond the coincidence of a missing folio count.

Administration and Incident

Gamma-7 is administered under the Clasped Appendix rules despite its sewn binding, on the reasoning that it was clasped first. This produces a standing anomaly: requests for the appendix are made on the clasped form, in duplicate, and the duplicate is destroyed on receipt. In the winter of 1387 the fourth-floor reading room lost heat for nine days and the Gamma-7 appointment book was used as fuel by an unidentified party, an incident recorded in the Scriptorium's register under the heading "Retained Matter, Destroyed." The register does not name the eleven appointments lost. They were restored from memory and are marked as such.

Permission to consult the blank seventh leaf requires a separate application, countersigned by the Librarian of the Gamma Series. The application is short. The countersignature is not. In practice applicants are advised to request the leaf at the same time as the appendix and to bring their own stool, the Gamma room having supplied none since the binding of the Fourth Concordance, Appendix Ω required both of the room's own.
