Clasped Appendix

A clasped appendix is a supplemental document formally attached to a primary Concordance, Annex, or Sub-Appendix after the parent document's initial sealing, as authorized by Article VII of the Sixth Concordance. Unlike a Sewn Appendix, which is physically bound at the moment of sealing, a clasped appendix is affixed via a system of standardized brass clasps, allowing for administrative amendment and expansion without necessitating a full re-binding of the foundational text.

Physical Specifications

The physical attachment is governed by meticulous regulation. Each clasped appendix must utilize a set of no fewer than three, and no more than seven, archival-grade brass clasps, manufactured to the specifications outlined in Annex 4-C of the Sixth Concordance. The clasps are riveted through both the appendix and the parent document's designated "amendment margin," a pre-scored, reinforced strip left blank for this express purpose. The use of adhesives, thread, or non-standard fasteners renders an appendix invalid, per Ruling 89 of the Court of Binding Precedent.

Procedural Protocol

The process for creating a clasped appendix is one of the Tower's most elaborate bureaucratic rituals. It requires a petition signed by three Librarians of differing seniority grades, reviewed by the Office of Perpetual Affairs, and subsequently notarized by the Keeper of the Chronostatic Seal. Legal Status and Precedence

However, scholarly debate persists regarding its hierarchical relationship to later, non-clasped amendments. The School of Latent Materialism argues that a clasped appendix, being physically linked, carries more ontological "weight" than a later, unattached proclamation. Notable Examples and Anomalies

The most famous clasped appendix is the Lost Appendix of the Ninth Concordance, which was authorized but reportedly vanished during the logistical chaos surrounding the Ninth Librarian's Expedition. Its clasps, according to inventory records, were nevertheless accounted for, leading to the philosophical problem of an appendix that is physically attached but conceptually absent. Another significant case is Appendix Omega, which exists in both a sewn and a theoretically clasped state, attached to different editions of the same annex; researchers require a security clearance of Level Σ to compare the two versions.

The practice also extends to objects. The Sigil Alpha, or 'Clasped Gauntlet,' was retroactively granted the status of a clasped appendix to the Obsidian Decree after its military utility was proven, though it predates the decree by several chronologies.

Nullification and Phantom Appendices

A clasped appendix may be nullified under Security Protocol Sigma, a process that involves the ceremonial removal of the brass clasps but mandates that the holes left in the parent document remain unfilled. The appendix's content is then redacted with indelible, light-absorbing ink. In contemporary practice, the creation of new clasped appendices has declined sharply since the Fifty-Year Moratorium on Amendment (Concordance XXII, Appendix B). Most administrative changes are now handled through declarative footnotes or the establishment of new, standalone ordinances. However, the mechanism remains a critical part of the Tower's juridical architecture, serving as a permanent record of bureaucratic intent and a physical testament to the principle that even the most foundational truths may require external support.
