Metaphorical Supports
MS 4350.00 · Practices and doctrines
Metaphorical Supports are architectural and conceptual constructs within The Tower designed to stabilize, define, or lend credence to subjects whose existence is purely notional. They are formally recognized as structural elements under Appendix Gamma-7 of the Protocol of Manifest Delineation, and their implementation falls under the shared jurisdiction of the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild and the now-dissolved Office of New Supports.
Definition and Typology
Per the Lexicon of Unseen Architecture (1978, revised 2003), a Metaphorical Support is any declared fixture—be it a pillar, buttress, keystone, or foundation—that bears a load described as "conceptual," "allegorical," or "hermeneutic." The key distinction from a physical support is its acceptance of burden from an object that, by Tower definition, does not exist. The most common typologies are:
- Pillars of Intent: Used to uphold the premises of unfinished arguments or suspended legal judgments.
- Buttresses of Consensus: Applied to walls of disputed fact, shoring them against the pressure of contradictory evidence.
- Foundations of Legacy: Employed to retroactively justify the continued relevance of obsolete administrative bodies.
- Keystones of Coherence: Inserted into theoretical frameworks to prevent internal collapse under the weight of their own contradictions.
"A support, once deemed metaphorical, acquires a gravity of its own. It is no longer a symbol of support; it is the support for the symbol."
Regulatory History and Implementation
The formalization of Metaphorical Supports began with the establishment of the Office of New Supports in 1962, a subsection of the Office of the Cartographer-Archivist. The Office’s mandate was to review petitions for "new structural assertions" and oversee their drafting and placement. This process was notoriously bureaucratic, requiring notarized Burden Assessments, triplicate Cartae Metaphoricae, and a witnessed physical clasping of the relevant appendix by a quorum of the Guild.
Critics, including some within the Office itself, argued that procedures like the Valen Axiom institutionalized obscurity, making the system impenetrable to all but a few specialists. The Office was dissolved in 2011 following the Proliferation of Buttresses incident on Floor 4,312 (the Splenic Swamp), where an unchecked cascade of mutually-referential supports nearly caused a localized reality sink. Responsibility was subsequently redistributed to the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild for surveying and drafting, and to the Office of Suggestive Logistics for material requisition.
Ontological Status and Disputes
The precise ontological weight of a Metaphorical Support has been a matter of prolonged scholarly and administrative conflict. The central question is whether the support derives reality from the thing it supports, or if the act of support itself confers a degree of reality upon the support.
The Board of Concordant Interpretation attempted to settle this in 1994 with The Seventy-Seventh Clarification. It declared that "the metaphorical support possesses a reality derivative of, but distinct from, the conceptual load it bears. Its reality is procedural, not substantive." This ruling was immediately contested by the Guild of Unwritten Precedents, which argued that it undermined the foundational principle of Concordant Verification. The dispute often resurfaces in cases requiring Resolution Drafting, particularly where routing authority for conceptual loads is contested.
Notable Installations
- The Pillars of the Unspoken Accord (Floor 1,147)
- A ring of seven obsidian pillars upholding an empty dais. Installed in 1988 by the Office of New Supports following a jurisdictional stalemate between two Librarian factions. The dais remains vacant, but the pillars are inspected biannually for "signs of strain."
- The Flying Buttress of Epistemic Drift (Western Wall, Floor 9,001)
- An elegant, apparently superfluous stone arch that leaps from a solid wall to a point in mid-air three meters away. It was drafted to counteract the gradual erosion of a foundational text, though the text in question was later redacted. The buttress remains due to a filing error, now serving as a prime example of self-sustaining metaphorical function.
- The Foundation Stone of Primary Citizenship (Sub-basement, Annex Δ)
- A single granite block upon which the entire legal fiction of Primary Citizenship is said to rest. Ceremonial tapping of the stone by a nominated citizen is part of the Arrival Sigil ritual, though many applicants report the stone feeling "suspiciously insubstantial."
Current Procedures and Legacy
Since the dissolution of the Office of New Supports, the protocol for erecting a new Metaphorical Support is governed by a tripartite agreement between the Metaphorical Cartel entities. A petitioner, typically from a department like the Office of Speculative Reinforcements, must file a Notice of Conceptual Load with the Guild. The Guild then surveys the proposed site, drafts the Carta Metaphorica, and places Boundary Stelae. The Office of Ontic Verification conducts a final review to ensure the support does not inadvertently validate a proscribed concept.
The legacy of the Metaphorical Support system is one of essential, if paradoxical, infrastructure. It allows the Tower to manage the immense weight of its own fictional holdings, providing a latticework upon which the archive's vast edifice of non-reality securely rests. As per Clause 19 of the Third Concordance, "That which is stated to be supported, is thereby supported," rendering the entire system a perfect, closed loop of bureaucratic efficacy.
