Cardiocentric
MS 0330.41 · Practices and doctrines
Cardiocentric refers to the principle of heart-centered reality organization and is the founding metaphysical doctrine of the Autonomic Assembly, a regulatory body established under the Seventh and Eighth Concordances to oversee operations on Pulse Floor and its associated circulatory annexes. The doctrine holds that all true systemic integrity, archival coherence, and procedural authority within the Tower emanate from a metaphorical, and in some interpretations literal, cardiac core.
Core Tenets
The central axiom of Cardiocentricity is articulated in Clause 3.14.7 of the Eighth Concordance: "The Tower is a body; its knowledge is its blood; its order is its heartbeat." Proponents argue that the irregular but persistent rhythm detected in certain Silent Stacks—documented as a 72-beats-per-minute thrumming in the structural granite of the Ventricular Reading Room—is not an architectural anomaly but the physical manifestation of this principle. Consequently, any cataloguing or retrieval process that aligns with or reinforces a rhythmic, cyclical pattern is deemed "cardiac-compliant" and receives expedited processing privileges from the Assembly.
Key operational practices derived from Cardiocentrism include the mandatory Systolic-Diastolic Filing System, where documents are deemed "in systole" (actively being processed) or "in diastole" (at rest in the archives), and the prohibition of any linear, non-repeating organizational schema on Pulse Floor. The Assembly’s inspectors are authorized to levy fines for "arrythmic cataloguing," a broad charge often applied to indexing methods deemed too erratic or, paradoxically, too monotonously regular.
Historical Development
The doctrine’s origins are obscure, though most scholars credit the obscure philosopher-archivist Systole of the Third Spiral with its first formal articulation circa T.R. 14,322. Systole’s treatise, On the Circulation of Truth, posited that knowledge, like blood, must be kept in perpetual, directed motion to prevent stagnation and necrosis of understanding. His work was largely ignored until the Great Congestion, a four-decade period of near-total administrative paralysis across seventeen contiguous floors, which was reportedly resolved only when clerks adopted a pulsating work schedule.
This practical success led to the formal establishment of the Autonomic Assembly and the enshrinement of Cardiocentric principles in the Seventh and Eighth Concordances. The Assembly’s headquarters, the Grand Atrium, was constructed on Pulse Floor (designated Floor Λ-7) and features a central, perpetually oscillating pendulum clock whose tick is synchronized to the alleged granite pulse.
Disputed Interpretations
Significant scholarly disagreement exists regarding the literalness of the doctrine. The Literalist School, led by the current High Cardiarch, asserts that the Tower possesses a literal, physical heart—a massive, mythic organ located at an unknown coordinate, possibly in the Deep Stacks—and that all administrative and physical systems are its vasculature. They cite the unexplained, warm air currents in the Aortic Shaft as evidence of "metabolic activity."
The Metaphorical School, whose views are quietly endorsed by many senior Librarians outside the Assembly, holds that Cardiocentrism is merely a supremely effective organizational metaphor. They argue the documented pulse is a harmonic resonance caused by distant clockwork machinery and that the doctrine’s utility lies in its psychological effect, not its metaphysical truth. This schism remains unresolved, as open debate risks charges of "hemodynamic heresy" from the Assembly.
Influence and Application
Cardiocentric compliance is mandatory for all operations on Pulse Floor and its direct tributaries, including the Capillary Corridors and the Venous Returns. Its influence extends further afield, however. The Circadian Rhythms Ordinance, which governs lighting and clerk shift changes Tower-wide, is a direct application of Cardiocentric principle. Furthermore, the design of the Recursive Staircase, which loops back upon itself at regular intervals, is often cited as an architectural echo of the doctrine.
The Assembly reviews all new Concordance proposals for "cardiac viability," a process that has delayed the ratification of several amendments, most notably the Nineteenth Concordance concerning non-linear chronology. Critics from the Dialectic Guild argue this gives an unelected body veto power over legislative processes, a charge the Assembly dismisses as "the fibrillation of a disordered mind."
Notable Instruments
The authority of the Autonomic Assembly is exercised through several unique instruments. The Sphygmomanometer of Authority is a complex device of brass and crystal used to measure the "administrative pressure" of a given department; low readings can trigger a mandatory audit. The Stethoscope of Concordance is a long, funnel-like tube of polished ebony used during ratification ceremonies to "listen for harmony" between new clauses and the existing cardiac rhythm. Perhaps most feared is the Defibrillator of Last Resort, a large capacitor bank kept in the Atrium basement, purportedly to be used only to "jump-start" a floor suffering total systemic failure. Its use has never been recorded.
