Principle of Contained Reality
MS 6420.73 · Practices and doctrines
The Principle of Contained Reality is the primary administrative and metaphysical doctrine governing the operational status of all catalogued entities within The Tower. It asserts that an item's reality is a function of its precise archival location: once formally indexed, an entity is considered functionally real for all purposes within the boundaries of its assigned floor and classification, irrespective of any external ontological status. The Principle is the foundation for the Tower's day-to-day functionality and the resolution of most ontological disputes.
Formal Statement
The canonical formulation appears in Ordinance 7, Annex A, Section 1: "The act of inscription upon an approved shelf, within a properly designated floor and according to established classificatory protocols, confers upon the subject a state of Contained Reality. This reality is bounded by the physical and conceptual limits of its catalogued location. Questioning the subject's reality outside these bounds is a procedural error, not an ontological inquiry." This statement is frequently cross-referenced with the Principle of Contained Veracity, with which it forms a complementary pair; Contained Veracity deals with truth-claims, while Contained Reality deals with existential status.
Operational Application
In practice, the Principle mandates that a Librarian treating a case of, for example, non-corporeal weeping in the sub-stacks of Floor 14β must act as if the phenomenon is materially present and affecting the local environment. The weeping's reality is incontrovertible within Floor 14β. However, a report of the same phenomenon on Floor 22Θ, where it is not catalogued, would be filed under "Unsubstantiated Environmental Anomaly" unless a cross-floor contamination event was proven. The Principle thus allows for the coexistence of mutually exclusive realities in separate locations, a state further refined by the doctrine of Simultaneous Veracity.
The system is maintained through a regimen of environmental stabilization, including the installation of Harmonic Suppression Plates at floor transitions to minimize reality-bleed, and regular Reality Audits to ensure that a catalogued entity's manifested properties have not exceeded its containment parameters.
Historical Development and the Provisional Precedent
The Principle was not always the dominant framework. Prior to the Provisional Stack Relocation (1952-1954), reality was considered an inherent property of a subject, leading to intractable conflicts when contradictory subjects were housed in adjacent stacks. The crisis was resolved by the adoption of a phased ontological integration, later formalized as Provisional Reality. This established the precedent that reality could be an administrative outcome, contingent on placement and procedural adherence. The Principle of Contained Reality codified this pragmatic approach, superseding older, more absolutist doctrines like the Principle of Textual Immanence.
Scholarly Disputes and Contradictions
While the Principle is cornerstone policy, its interpretation is subject to significant debate, largely due to contradicting Concordances. The central dispute concerns the "boundaries" of containment. A strict reading of Concordance 12 supports a literal, physical interpretation: the reality is contained within the shelf, room, or at most, the floor. A more expansive interpretation, favored by the Cardiocentric school and supported by clauses within Concordance 8, argues that the "conceptual limits" include any associated cross-references, footnotes, and citation chains, effectively creating a distributed reality-network across multiple floors.
A further contradiction arises from Clause 1 of the founding documents, which implies an intrinsic reality precedes cataloguing. Revisionist scholars argue this renders the Principle of Contained Reality a later, pragmatic overlay rather than a fundamental truth, a position tacitly acknowledged in the establishment of The Stack of Open Argument, where such foundational disputes are perpetually housed.
Related Doctrines and Instruments
The Principle is the linchpin connecting several key Tower practices:
- Principle of Catalogued Reality
- Often confused with Contained Reality, this earlier principle concerns the threshold for admission into the catalogue, whereas Contained Reality governs the consequences of that admission.
- Presumption of Operative Fiction
- A procedural rule applied during audits, stating that until proven otherwise via the Principle, a malfunction should be treated as a fictional narrative exerting local effect.
- Ordinance of Contained Potential
- Governs the handling of items deemed to have "latent" reality that has not yet fully manifested within their containment field.
- Silent Column
- A notorious case study where strict adherence to the Principle failed, as the catalogued "silence" eventually breached containment parameters, requiring extraordinary measures.
Ultimately, the Principle of Contained Reality is less a philosophical statement about existence and more a robust operating system for an archive where existence is the primary variable to be managed. Its success is measured not by metaphysical consistency, but by the continued, conflict-minimized operation of The Tower's endless shelves.
