Non Linear Chronology

MS 5367.10 · Practices and doctrines

Non Linear Chronology is the study and administrative regulation of temporal measurement upon floors whose local sequence does not correspond to the Standard Tower Chronology, and whose records frequently intersect with the Non Linear Index. It is distinguished from the Fifth Chronology by its refusal of any calibrated epoch, and from the Stairwell Chronology by its application to inhabited floors rather than transit shafts. The Office of Non Sequential Hours holds primary stewardship, though the Bureau of Cyclical Integration disputes this in three surviving recensions.

Origins and Early Recensions

The first formal treatment of Non Linear Chronology appears in the marginalia of the Second Concordance, where Clerk Orvyn of the Lower Scriptoria noted that "a floor which cannot be reached in order cannot be dated in order" (Second Concordance, Margin 7, recension of the 4th Bureau). This observation was later adopted, without attribution, by the Chronology Guild in its foundational survey of Floor 7,117. The Guild's Report on Recursive Temporal Anomalies confirmed non linear chronometric readings within that floor and established the precedent that any floor exhibiting a recursive hour must be logged under the Non-Linear/Spiral (NL) classificatory shorthand.

By the 9th Cycle of the Standard Archive Chronology, the study had fractured into two schools: the Adjacent Temporists, who held that disordered time was merely mis filed, and the Native Sequence adherents, who maintained that certain floors generated their own chronology ex void. The dispute was referred to the Committee for Non-Intersecting Jurisdictions, which ruled, at Annex 9, that neither school might cite the other without a Conscious Collapse waiver from the Bureau of Unified Perspective.

Relation to Annex E and the Non Linear Index

Annex E: Non-Linear Progression describes a stairwell originally built to non linear progression and asserts that any floor may receive a graft provided the Bureau of Unified Perspective has issued a Conscious Collapse waiver. The same annex articulates the standard, non sequential career advancement protocol for members of the Librarian Order, a matter the Office of Arbitrated Non Harmony later took up as a general warrant for separation, codifying Non Interactivity. Within the Non Linear Index, Non Linear Chronology is filed under conceptual adjacency to settlement sag and recursive reference, though the index's own administrators concede that "the entry references itself at a year which has not yet occurred" (Non Linear Index, internal note sigma).

A snarl is defined in Annex E: Non-Linear Progression as any persistence of contradiction in a line otherwise certified linear, lasting beyond the third survey and unattributable to settlement or sag. The Linear Snarlers and the The Linear Snarlers have each been observed cultivating temporal snarls on Floor 19, whose ordinal designation remains procedurally ambiguous under the same annex.

Incidents of Recorded Discrepancy

During the winter of the 12th Cycle, the Expeditionary Protocols for Non-Sequential Floors were suspended on Floor 4,002 after three consecutive surveys returned dates in the order: 0, 0, minus 1, 0. The lead expeditionary, Clerk Hest of the Northern Desks, recorded that "we dined on the third day before we packed the first" (Incident Chronology, Floor 4,002 annex). The School of Linear Dependency issued a rebuttal asserting the meals were mis labelled, not mis timed, but the Bureau of Cyclical Integration accepted the anomaly as a valid Non Linear Chronology event.

In a separate finding, the Third Concordance (Annex 4) holds that:

"No floor shall be dated by a chronology it has not ratified, and ratification may proceed in any order the floor elects, including posthumously."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

This clause directly contradicts Standard Tower Chronology Section 2, which requires ratification in ascending floor number. The contradiction has never been adjudicated, as both documents are held to be in force simultaneously under the doctrine of coincidental authority.

Scholarly Disagreement on the Spiral Holding

The most sustained dispute concerns whether Non Linear Chronology should absorb the temporary holding classification of the Spiral. The Non-Linear/Spiral (NL) designation treats spiral transit as a subtype of non sequential progression, yet the Tower Chronology commission argues the Spiral generates time outward rather than disordering it inward. Clerk Mavven of the Upper Recension wrote that "to date a spiral is to date a snail's opinion" (Tower Chronology, dissenting appendix omega), a phrase the Chronology Guild has formally denounced without explanation twice.

The Bureau of Cyclical Integration proposes a joint ledger, while the Office of Non Sequential Hours refuses on the grounds that "a shared ledger implies a shared first page" (Office of Non Sequential Hours, ordinance 11 delta). No resolution is recorded.

Administrative Notes

Visiting clerks assigned to Non Linear Chronology floors must surrender their standard timepieces at the 3rd landing and accept a floor issued shard, regardless of whether the shard displays a year. The Bureau of Unified Perspective maintains that this reduces perspective collapse incidents by 40 per thousand surveys, though the Linear Perspective Collapse office has not confirmed the figure.

Current holdings under Non Linear Chronology number 1,114 discrete floors, with Floor 7,117 remaining the only floor whose entire chronology is stored within the Non Linear Index rather than the Standard Archive Chronology. The Fifth Chronology continues to run in parallel for those who request it, though requests are logged in non linear order and answered by the 4th Bureau at its convenience.
