Latent Agent
MS 6189.76 · Practices and doctrines
Latent Agent is a tripartite taxonomic classification used to designate subjects, typically within the category of archival materials or documented phenomena, that possess a demonstrable capacity to absorb, retain, or catalyze agency without manifesting it autonomously. Its formal establishment is attributed to the Seventy-Seventh Clarification, which appended it to the existing duality of 'Agent' and 'Object' as a necessary intermediary. As per The Precept of Withheld Agency, a Latent Agent is defined by its "indeterminate agency," a state wherein potential for action is inherent but requires an external stimulus or specific contextual alignment to be realized.
Taxonomic Foundation
The classification arose from the practical difficulties encountered by the Acquisition Agents of the Bureau of Acquisition. Numerous retrieved materials exhibited behaviors incompatible with pure Object-status—such as influencing nearby events or retaining impressions of intent—yet lacked the volitional independence required for Agent-status. The Seventy-Seventh Clarification resolved this by introducing the Latent Agent as a third ontological tier. Crucially, a subject's classification can shift; a sample of Somnolent Sand may be an Object during transport, become a Latent Agent upon exposure to a documented emotional event, and theoretically, under conditions outlined in Quarantined Catalysts protocols, exhibit full Agent-like properties.
Operational Mechanisms
The functional core of Latent Agency is the absorption and retention of 'Intent'. This is not a metaphysical concept but a measurable archival contaminant, often compared to a resonance. Materials like the aforementioned Somnolent Sand, or the binding compound in Adhesive Silence, serve as sponges for ambient intentionality. The Office of Latent Properties maintains that this process is passive and stochastic. However, the rival School of Latent Materialism argues for a more active, quasi-nutritive process, suggesting certain materials 'seek out' Intent to fulfill a pre-ordained latent function, a theory heavily criticized in the Review of Latent Parameters.
Catalytic Activation
Latency implies eventual manifestation. Activation typically requires a catalytic agent or a specific environmental condition, a principle later extended to regulatory texts via Amendment 14-f. For example, Sleeping Ink remains inert until its differentiating agent, Xanthoria catalogica, is introduced. The presence of a conscious observer, a specific architectural configuration detailed in the Treatise on Latent Architectonics, or proximity to another active Agent can also serve as a trigger. The Procedures for Latent Integration provide strict guidelines for managing such activation events within archival stacks.
Disputed Classifications & The Thorne Principle
Not all latent potentials are recognized equally. Commissioner Aris Thorne's influential principle demands an unambiguous, documentable relationship between the latent subject and a specific, intended action or architectural outcome. Under this rigorous framework, many phenomena studied by the School of Latent Potential—such as corridors that seem to 'remember' frequent destinations—are dismissed as unverifiable anecdote, not formal Latent Agency. This has led to a protracted scholarly conflict with the School of Latent Structure, which employs Latent Structure Tapping to map these very impressions, arguing they represent a diffuse, collective form of latency.
Regulatory and Archival Handling
Latent Agents are subject to unique handling protocols. Their storage often requires neutral buffer materials, such as Luminous Mortar, to prevent unintended cross-contamination of Intent. An Acquisition Agent encountering an uncatalogued Latent Agent in the field must assess its stability against the criteria in Archival Hazard bulletins. If the latent properties are deemed too volatile or unpredictable for safe retrieval, the agent is authorized to file a Form 447-A: Notice of Unattainable Resource after ceasing pursuit, citing the latent instability as the unattainable condition. This underscores the central bureaucratic paradox of the classification: a Latent Agent is simultaneously a known quantity and an indeterminate variable, forever suspended between the certainty of Object and the autonomy of Agent.
