Quarantined Catalysts
MS 0923.00 · Practices and doctrines
A Quarantined Catalyst is any agent of ontological transformation that has been formally designated under Clause 17 of the Third Concordance as posing a persistent, irreducible risk to catalogical stability. Unlike a Quarantined Aperture, which seals a location, a catalyst quarantine targets the anomalous object or substance itself, imposing strict protocols for its containment, study, and potential reclassification.
Regulatory Framework
The designation is governed by the Protocol for Unstable Transmutative Articles (Third Concordance, Annex Ξ). A Quarantined Catalyst must exhibit one or more of the following properties: spontaneous causation of paradox, recursive self-reference that alters local reality parameters, or adhesion to potential states over actual ones (see Forgotten Resin for a paradigmatic example). Initiation of quarantine requires a joint vote by the Adjudication Chamber and the Chamber of Silence, followed by the application of a specialized version of the Aperture Seal directly to the catalyst's housing. The cerulean wax used for this purpose is sourced exclusively from the hives of Spiral 12.
Containment Procedures
Standard procedure, as updated following the Chen Discrepancy inquiry, mandates containment within a triple-layered reality cell. The primary layer is a vacuum chamber; the secondary layer consists of lead-glass inscribed with non-referential glyphs; the tertiary layer is the administrative fiction that the object does not exist, maintained by the assigned Librarian-Curator. All observational data must be recorded using pre-approved non-sequitur logbooks, which are incinerated quarterly. Notably, physical interaction is less regulated than intellectual access; merely thinking about the catalyst's properties in a structured way is considered a Class-II contam event.
Notable Instances
The Tower's registry currently lists forty-seven Quarantined Catalysts. Among the most studied are:
- Folio A-77b (The Chen Discrepancy): A single page that causes any logical proof written within one meter of it to invert its own conclusion. Quarantined in 811.
- The Kettleman Copy Resonances: While the Kettleman Copy itself is a document, the anomalous cognitive field it generates—causing marginalia to appear in unrelated texts—was reclassified as a catalytic phenomenon in 934.
- Forgotten Resin: A substance that exhibits 'pure potential adhesion,' meaning it only bonds to objects that could have existed but do not. Its storage vial is kept in a vault that officially contains only dust.
Scholarly Disagreement
A significant doctrinal rift exists regarding the endpoint of a catalyst quarantine. The Stasis School, citing the Third Concordance, argues that quarantine is a permanent state; a catalyst, by definition, cannot be rendered inert. The Transformational School, drawing upon obscure passages in the disputed Seventh Concordance, posits that quarantine is a preparatory phase for "controlled ignition"—using the catalyst to safely collapse a separate paradox, such as an Aperture Storm. This debate remains theoretical, as the Custodians of the Aperture have never approved such an application.
Reclassification & Decommissioning
Reclassification from Quarantined Catalyst to Inert Artifact is theoretically possible but procedurally arduous. It requires demonstrating a ninety-nine-year period of catalytic dormancy, followed by a unanimous finding from the Adjudication Chamber that the object's defining anomalous property was a "circumstantial echo" and not intrinsic. To date, only two items have ever been decommissioned, and both were subsequently lost in routine archival transfers, leading some scholars to suggest the quarantine protocol itself may be a catalytic entity of a higher order.
