Quarantined Catalyst
MS 1130.11 · Practices and doctrines
Quarantined Catalyst is the formal designation applied within the Tower to any agent of ontological transformation judged to pose a persistent, irreducible risk to catalogical stability. The designation is conferred by the Adjudication Chamber and derives its authority from Clause 17 of the Third Concordance, which provides that any article "whose presence alters the class, category, or standing of its neighbours" shall be isolated pending authentication of its transformative vector. Quarantined Catalysts are further classified as a subcategory of Unstable Concepts under the Protocol for Unstable Transmutative Articles, the annex governing the qualities a catalyst must exhibit before isolation is confirmed rather than merely ordered.
The terminology is frequently contested in practice and is discussed below; the Chamber does not regard the contest as an obstacle to its work.
The three marks of the class
A candidate catalyst is examined against three marks. It must transform something other than itself; it must continue to do so after removal from the observer; and its transformation must resist reversal by ordinary recension. Articles satisfying fewer than three marks are returned to the floor of origin with a note, which is itself sometimes the beginning of a second case.
The Chamber's standing formulary gives an example of a candidate failing at the third mark: a broadsheet of unspecified origin found on a stairwell at 4,411 in the winter of 1907, which converted every date written near it into a date eleven days later. The anomaly ceased when the broadsheet was folded, and the fold was accepted as an ordinary recension. The article was returned to the floor of origin on 2 March 1908. The note attached to it records that the floor had no tray for returned articles and that it was left on a chair.
Authentication and the Scriptorium
Before quarantine takes effect, the transformative vector of a Quarantined Catalyst must be authenticated by the Scriptorium of Definite Articles, which alone determines the precise article affected. The Scriptorium's position, held since the Seventh Concordance, is that a catalyst cannot be said to transform a class without a definite article to attach to it; a vector authenticated as "affecting the concept" is therefore held void. This has produced a backlog measured in some years, and the Chamber has on three occasions quarantined an article on its own recognisance, each time recording the irregularity in the margin rather than in the register.
Authentication has an established failure mode. Folio A-77b, quarantined in 811 and itself a catalyst, entered a state of recursive virulence during authentication in 1909 and required isolation at a level the Scriptorium did not then possess. The Chen Amendment, Clause 4(b), revised in that same year, provides that a catalyst quarantined in excess of ninety days shall be counted as part of the floor's furniture — a provision intended to simplify inventory and which has since been cited, wrongly, in support of seating arrangements.
Holdings currently under designation
The register of Quarantined Catalysts is not published in full. The following are confirmed:
- Forgotten Resin, held to exhibit pure potential adhesion and stored in a vault that officially contains only dust;
- Folio A-77b, the Chen Discrepancy, quarantined 811, recatalogued twice, and at present not approached by any route the Chamber will confirm;
- An aperture fixture of disputed origin, referenced only through the aperture schedule and never by name;
- Various minor catalysts classified as Quarantined Forms under the Chamber's interim practice, though the Charter of 1744 as superseded draws the distinction differently — the Charter reserving the Form to objects capable of being pointed at, which the Resin has twice defeated.
Disagreement among the Concordances
The Third Concordance treats catalysts as a class of agent; the Seventh Concordance treats them as a class of article. The distinction is not academic. Under the Third, a catalyst exists independently of its floor and may be recorded in the abstract register; under the Seventh, the catalyst has no standing until it has been authenticated against a definite article, and an unauthenticated catalyst is, in the words of the Scriptorium's third recension, "an adjective without a noun, and therefore not before us."
"An agent unattached is an agent ungoverned; let it be attached, or let it be struck from the roll."
— Third Concordance, Annex 9, gloss on Clause 17
The Adjudication Chamber has never resolved the question, preferring to maintain both registers and to record its findings in whichever is at hand. The Protocol recognises the divergence at §2 without settling it. Librarians writing in the margin of the register have grown accustomed to citing whichever Concordance suits the entry; the Kettleman Copy of 1830 goes so far as to list both citations on every page, in a hand later than the text.
Isolation practice
Quarantine is maintained under the paradox contamination protocols, which require confirmation of contamination before an area is sealed. Confirmation is by witnessed recurrence, and witnesses are rare. Areas sealed under these protocols include Spiral 77-Gamma, which interfaces with the Western Atmospheric Spiral and has not been entered since 1911, and the Chamber of Silence, which the Chamber describes as functioning. Materials used in sealing include Silentium Sealant, specified under Directive Somnia-Ω for the lining of Quarantined Dormitory facilities.
Catalysts are not destroyed. No procedure for the destruction of a catalyst is recognised in any extant recension, and the Chamber's view is that a procedure, once written, would itself require examination. The Custodians of the Aperture advise that catalysts be left where they lie.
Absence from the record
A number of Quarantined Catalysts are known only through the traces they leave in inventory. The Desolate Quarter has been entered thirteen times and each entry recovered a fuller account of the quarter's furnishings and a shorter account of its stimulus. The Zone of Calcified Echoes is similarly inconclusive, its vertical extent recorded variously as 34, 71, and, in one reading, "not applicable." The classified roll notes that the number of catalysts currently under designation is held constant, and that the constant has not been published.
