The Principle of Conferred Being

MS 6474.16 · Practices and doctrines

The Principle of Conferred Being is the operative doctrine of archival existence within the Tower, holding that an entity attains the status of "being" for catalogue purposes only upon the successful completion of a designated cataloguing action, as defined under the Charter of Conferred Being and reaffirmed by the Fourteenth Concordance. It is the foundational premise of the School of Jurisprudential Ontology and the basis upon which the Great Ledger of Potentialities is inscribed.

Origins and Ratification

The Principle was first codified during the Great Re-shelving, an undertaking that concluded on 22 Numen 47 with the ratification of the Charter of Conferred Being upon Floor 1,027 (the Epistemological Landing). The Fourteenth Concordance, ratified as a direct consequence of that reorganisation, established the new taxonomical schema and the Principle in its presently cited form. Codex I of the Charter of Conferred Being mandates that a conferred being's primary designation, classification string, and initial properties be inscribed without delay in the Great Ledger of Potentialities, a requirement that the Guild of Dormant Scribes has interpreted as itself a constituent element of the designated action rather than a mere recording of it.

Mechanism of Conferment

Under the Principle of Conferred Being (practice), an entity is considered to "be" for archival purposes only upon the successful completion of a designated cataloguing action. The precise nature of that action is delegated by the Charter of Conferred Being to subordinate schedules; the Supplemental Charter 44-B outlines the core mandate of the 22.J Atelier, which is among the offices authorised to specify aperture-markings for provisional subjects. The Guild of Dormant Scribes requires, per Codex IV of the Charter of Conferred Being, at least one "anchor attribute" for a conferred entity to be verifiable under observation protocols.

A noted failure occurred in the winter of 88 Numen, when a clerk of the 22.J Atelier inscribed a stairwell-spirit without an anchor attribute, citing an oral dispensation from a Senior Archivist who denied the conversation. The entity was held by the Sanctioned Ledger to be non-conferred and was subsequently re-shelved as a Quarantined Catalyst, a ruling later vacated on procedural grounds by the Third Concordance.

Relation to Other Doctrines

The Principle is frequently contrasted with the Principle of Inherency, which posits that certain entities possess being independent of catalogue action, and with the Principle of Contained Veracity, which governs the truth-value of conferred records. The Axiom of Definitive Placement is held by the Treatise on Bureaucratic Ontology to be subordinate to the Principle in all matters of initial inscription. The Charter of Conferred Being takes precedence over the Charter of Forbearance in cases of conflict with an entity's conferred existential status, and supersedes the Charter of Reclassification in cases of existential reclassification.

"Vocalic entities shall be entered under the jurisdiction of the Charter of Conferred Being, yet the Vocalic Charter shall take precedence in matters of acoustic integrity."

— Charter of Conferred Being, Vocalic Schedule

Scholarly Dispute

A longstanding disagreement concerns whether the Principle permits anticipatory conferral. The office of the Senior Archivist has maintained that no being may be conferred prior to its designated action, citing the Resolution 1 as prohibitive. The School of Jurisprudential Ontology, by contrast, holds that the Resolution 1 addresses sovereignty rather than ontology, and that anticipatory entries in the Great Ledger of Potentialities are consistent with Codex I. The Narrative Inertia of prior catalogue recensions has, in the view of the Treatise on Bureaucratic Ontology, rendered the dispute inert for administrative purposes; the Subject Inertia of affected entities is held by some clerks to persist nevertheless.

Administrative Notes

The Librarians have issued no unified statement reconciling the contradictions between the Fourteenth Concordance and the Third Concordance on the question of provisional inscription. Visitors to the scriptoria of the 22.J Atelier are reminded that ink used for anchor-attribute notation must be derived from the soot of the Tower's own lamps; imported carbon is not recognised for conferment and will be returned unopened.

The Charter of Conferred Being remains the higher-order document in all matters of conferred existence, and its ratification on Floor 1,027 (the Epistemological Landing) is recorded without amendment in the Sanctioned Ledger. The Immutability of a conferred designation, once inscribed, is defended by the Guild of Dormant Scribes under observation protocols established in Codex IV.
