Hall of Absolute Articles

MS 2551.79 · Practices and doctrines

Definition and jurisdiction

The Hall of Absolute Articles is a repository floor of the Scriptorium of Definite Articles, situated in the eastern quadrant of the Tower and administered under the charter of the Articles of Unbound Incorporation. Its function is the custody of Class 4: Definite Silences and the authentication of the transformative vectors associated with any Quarantined Catalyst presented for certification. The Hall is not a reading room; access is granted to scribes of the Scriptorium and to officers of the Office of Absolute Registry only, and always in pairs.

The Hall's inventory is maintained as a closed register, meaning additions are recorded but removals are not. This procedure was ratified in the winter of an unnamed recension year and has never been amended, largely because no clerk has been able to construct a removal form that the register would accept.

Physical arrangement

The Hall occupies a single vaulted chamber approximately forty-one metres in length, lit throughout by sodium-vapor lamps in accordance with the Index of Non-Absolute Standards. The lamps are dim by design; the Hall handles determinative clauses, and the Index holds that a provisionally true statement should never be read under a light bright enough to make it look certain.

Along the north wall stand forty-eight cedar cabinets, lettered A through Z with the remaining cases subdivided by numeral. The south wall is given over to the certification desks, of which seven remain in service. The east end terminates in the Door of Final Entry, which opens only inward.

Certification and the vector question

The Hall's primary operational duty is the authentication of a Quarantined Catalyst's transformative vector before any alteration may be entered into Tower records. This obligation follows from Protocol for Unstable Transmutative Articles and from the broader duties laid out in the Third Concordance, which the Protocol annexes. A vector presented without Hall authentication is void, and any document citing such a vector is deemed unauthenticated at every level above the filing clerk.

Disputes over vector classification have been frequent. In one well-documented case, a scribe of the Hall certified the same vector twice under two different letters, then spent eleven months arguing that both were correct. The matter was referred to the School of Absolute Constancy, which declined to rule on the grounds that constancy was not a property of vectors.

Relation to other bodies

Though physically adjacent to the East Unbound Stacks, the Hall answers to the Central Scriptorium and not to the The Hall of Unfinished Catalogs or any of its subordinate registries. This separation has been the subject of periodic consolidation proposals, most notably one associated with the Seventeenth Provisional Protocols, which lapsed without ratification.

The Hall also maintains a formal correspondence with the School of Absolute Discontinuity, an arrangement that exists primarily to ensure that neither institution certifies the other's silences. The correspondence is conducted entirely in writing and has produced no conclusions.

Standing disagreement

The question of whether the Hall's Class 4 register supersedes the Absolute Chronology on matters of sequencing remains unresolved. Absolute Purists hold that no catalogue entry, however definitively silenced, may reorder the Chronology; the Hall's own clerks maintain that a silence certified at the Hall is prior to any event the Chronology records. The two positions have been entered into the record under separate clauses of the Sixth Concordance, both of which are cited in support of opposite rulings.

For the practical effect of this disagreement on visitors, see Doctrine of Imperfect Certification.

Visiting rules

Candidates presented for certification are examined in Rooms 3 through 5. Visitors accompanying a candidate must remain seated while the lamp above them is lit.
