Archive of Disproven Branches

MS 7435.31 · Guilds, orders and offices

Archive of Disproven Branches is the Tower holding charged with the perpetual custody of citation paths, expedition logs, and provisional realities that have been demonstrated to lack structural resonance within the Tower. Established under the Foundation of Survey Protocols as a counterweight to the Archive of Provisional Origins, it occupies Floors 4,011 through 4,019 and a subordinate spiral annex numbered Spiral δ-7. The Archive does not dispute the validity of its contents; rather, it affirms their invalidity with exacting ceremony.

Establishment and Jurisdiction

The Archive was first constituted in the winter of the Year of the Archive 314, when the Board of Mandates determined that disproven branches of the Doctrine of Concordant Contradiction required a dedicated scriptorium rather than dispersal among the Archive of Superseded Authorities. Initial jurisdiction was narrow: only those branches pruned under the Seventeenth Concordance were eligible. The Office of Dimensional Integrity later argued, in a memorandum dated Spiral δ-7.iii, that auditory null-branches fell equally within scope, a claim the Office of the Archivist-Librarian rejected on the grounds that silence is not a branch but an interval. The dispute was settled by Clause 147.γ.2, which granted provisional reality to the silence until disproven, thereby suspending the Archive's authority over it for eleven years.

Custody of the holding is shared, in unusual arrangement, between the Custodians of Measurement and the Scribes of the Erroneous Premise, the latter operating under the Treatise on Proximate Nullities. A visiting clerk may consult either desk, though the Office of Onomastic Clarification notes that the two desks have not agreed on the spelling of "disproven" since the Year of the Archive 892.

Contents and Classification

Materials within the Archive are sorted by the floor integer at which their resonance failed. The largest single class derives from expeditions authorized under Major Expeditions that descended into intervals later declared void. A representative inventory from Spiral δ-7 follows:

Disproven attributions for Ambient Unquiet readings, where relevant, are filed separately with the Hall of Unquiet Pages, a procedure the Archive observes without enthusiasm. The Stamp Degradation event of the late recension period caused the loss of imprint on forty-two vellum leaves; these are retained as blank pages certified as "proven empty."

Scholarly Disagreement

A long-standing contradiction concerns whether a disproven branch may be re-catalogued as a Heretical Archive item or must remain forever within the present holding. The Archives of Superseded Authorities holds that reabsorption is permissible under the Seventeenth Concordance, while the Treatise on Proximate Nullities asserts that invalidated arguments "remain accessible as counterfactual references" and therefore cannot be promoted. The Archive of Particular Noons has published a marginal note suggesting the disagreement is itself a disproven branch, though no floor integer has been assigned.

"A branch cut is a branch kept; a branch burned is a branch remembered by its absence, which the Tower measures in spans."

— Scribes of the Erroneous Premise, Spiral δ-7 recension 4

Incidents of Note

In the Year of the Archive 314, a clerk of the Custodians of Measurement named Bellivant entered Spiral δ-7 to retrieve a disproven floor plan and remained for nine days, citing an inability to locate the exit that the plan had already established did not exist. The Office of the Archivist-Librarian authorized a Descents Practice to recover him, which concurrence records show was granted in error under the wrong archival branch. Bellivant was returned; the plan was re-filed as "more disproven."

The Dual-Guild Verification Protocol was once applied to a tactile sample from Floor 4,015, producing contradictory optical confirmation that the sample was both present and absent. The Archive-Grade Buffer 7 absorbed the discrepancy without comment. Visitors are prohibited from bringing untreated vellum into Spiral δ-7, as it tends to accept stamps from floors not yet disproven.

Administrative Status

The Archive answers to the Board of Mandates through the Custodians of Measurement, and its holdings are cross-indexed with the Vault of Ambiguous Provenance where provenance itself has been disproven. The School of Applied Metaphysics maintains a reading room on Floor 4,019, accessible only by the staircase that the Archive has proven does not curve westward. No Librarian has clarified this arrangement.
