Descents Practice
MS 3374.58 · Practices and doctrines
Descents Practice refers to the formalized, archival protocols governing all unauthorized, unsanctioned, or otherwise non-standard vertical expeditions within the Tower. Distinct from the officially regulated Guided Descents, the Descents Practice encompasses a body of tacit knowledge, improvised equipment, and heuristic methodologies developed by independent researchers, archival dissidents, and logistical contractors operating outside the provisions of Annex Omega of the Sixth Concordance. The practice exists in a state of persistent administrative gray area, simultaneously condemned by citation and facilitated by necessity.
Operational Distinction from Guided Descents
While Guided Descents are characterized by their adherence to Clause XVII.4 and oversight by the Directorate of Descent, a Descents Practice expedition is defined by its absence of formal authorization from the Office of the Archivist-Librarian. Key distinctions include the lack of a supervising Librarian of the Third Order, the use of non-standardized equipment (often repurposed from Catalogic Logistics surplus), and itineraries not filed with the Office of Catalogic Logistics. Crucially, practitioners operate under the philosophical premise that pre-authorization inherently contaminates the archival purity of findings from unlogged floors, a view explicitly rejected by The Curatorial Practice.
Core Methodologies
The Descents Practice is less a codified procedure and more a collection of adaptive techniques. Common methodologies include:
- Vellum-Tracing: Utilizing discarded drafts of official Tower documents (particularly misprinted Concordances) as provisional mapping material, under the theory that the vellum retains a residual affinity for structural truth.
- Ephemeral Anchoring: Employing objects categorized under the Persistent Ephemera Practice as temporary waypoints or atmospheric stabilizers in zones of high conceptual volatility.
- Velocity Borrowing: Manipulating the bureaucratic momentum of adjacent, authorized Descents to mask a practice expedition's initial departure, a technically complex procedure requiring deep understanding of Administrative Velocity.
These methods are transmitted orally or through encrypted appendices to otherwise mundane logistical reports.
Legal and Concordant Status
The legal standing of the Descents Practice is notoriously contradictory. Annex Epsilon of the Sixth Concordance implicitly prohibits "unsanctioned axial travel" in Clause IX.ii, yet the Chronological Precedence Practice is often invoked by practitioners to argue that exploratory descent predates the Concordances themselves, and thus cannot be wholly extinguished by them. Furthermore, the Sixth Concordance’s own Annex Omega provides such detailed protocols for containing, documenting, and cataloging the results of "irregular descents" that many scholars argue it functionally acknowledges their inevitability. Disputes are typically settled not in courts, but through the re-categorization of findings; a successful practice descent may have its outputs retroactively legitimized under a Guided Descents permit filed ex post facto.
The Role of the Tower Guide
Central to the practice is the unofficial, non-credentialed role of the Tower Guide. Unlike a Librarian-supervisor, a Guide is a contractor or volunteer with claimed experiential knowledge of specific non-canonical vertical routes, interstitial apertures, and the behavioral patterns of un-cataloged phenomena. Their authority derives entirely from reputational success and is often documented in a personal Vellum Descent log. The Directorate of Descent maintains no registry of Guides, and their existence is only acknowledged in Concordance footnotes pertaining to liability waivers.
Scholarly Dispute and the Delta Protocol
The major scholarly controversy surrounding the Descents Practice concerns the so-called Descent Protocol Delta-7-22. Proponents, often from the Academy of Archival Protocol, argue this protocol represents a legitimate, if austere, framework within the Practice for emergency documentation. Detractors, primarily within the Office of the Archivist-Librarian, contend "Delta-7-22" is a post-hoc fabrication, a synthetic tradition created to lend historical weight to what is essentially procedural anarchy. The debate hinges on the interpretation of water-damaged marginalia in a palimpsest believed to be a draft of the Preamble to the Curatorial Practice.
Output and Integration
Despite its extra-legal nature, the Descents Practice is a significant source of provisional data for the Tower's archives. Findings from practice descents, once sanitized of their methodological origins, frequently form the foundational observations for new archival categories. In this sense, the Practice operates as a kind of wildcat prospecting operation for the Tower's official knowledge economy, its practitioners bearing the risks of the unexplored so that their discoveries may later be absorbed and systematized by the authorized bureaucratic apparatus.
