Well of Unwritten Precepts

MS 1767.20 · Practices and doctrines

Overview

The Well of Unwritten Precepts is a shaft of dressed basalt in the north transept of the Chamber of Unwritten Precedents, on Floor 402, from which no written doctrine has ever been recovered and into which none may be deposited. It is among the few fixtures of the Tower whose holdings are defined entirely by absence. The Well is administered jointly by the Archivists of the Unwritten and the Censors of the Unwritten Word, an arrangement formalized under Concordance 19, Annex 6, and disputed ever since.

The Well is not to be confused with the Well of Unlit Echoes on Floor 89, which holds sound, or with the Breath of the Unwritten, a liturgical term of contested application. The distinction is drawn sharply in Manual of Recovered Precepts, Spiral 33, Aperture 12, and repeated in every orientation brief issued to incoming staff.

Description and dimensions

The shaft is 1.4 metres in interior diameter at the coping and descends beyond the reach of any sounding line yet devised. A plumb dropped by the surveyor Ahren Voss in the winter of 11,204 returned after nine days with its line unspent. Voss's report records the event without comment and closes with a note that the plumb was requisitioned from the Calibration Well and should be returned. It was not.

The coping carries forty-one inscribed grooves, each cut to a depth of two millimetres, arranged at intervals that do not correspond to any known measure. Whether the grooves constitute a text, a scale, or a defect in the stone is the subject of a standing inquiry before the Office of Material Ambiguity and has been since its foundation.

Prohibitions and the incident of Floor 402

Depositing written matter into the Well is prohibited absolutely. The prohibition is stated without qualification in Concordance 19, Annex 6, Clause 3: "Nothing that bears a mark shall descend." The Censors enforce this by inspection of the coping at each bell, and the inspection log has not missed a bell in four centuries, a fact the Censors cite in support of their broader claim to precedence over the Archivists.

"No precept may be lowered, whether by cord, by hand, or by any manner of conveyance not yet named, into the Well of Unwritten Precepts, and no precept so conveyed shall be considered to have been lowered."

— Precepts of Perpetual Adherence, Concordance Annex 44, Clauses 12–28

The prohibition was tested once. In the winter of 11,341, a junior archivist named Sela Orme lowered a folded recension of the Seventy-Seventh Clarification into the shaft on a waxed cord, intending, as her testimony records, "merely to see." The cord returned without the document and with its knot intact and untied, which the Precepts of Causal Integrity would regard as a category violation. Orme was reassigned to the Archive of Unwritten Prefaces for six years. The document was never recovered, and the Censors maintain that it was never lowered, since a lowering that cannot be completed cannot have occurred. The Archivists dispute this reading and note that Orme's cord is preserved, knotted, in their keeping.

Doctrinal status

Under Directive 12 of the Foundational Precepts of Cataloguement, verification is the cause, not the consequence, of a thing's existence. The Well is therefore anomalous by construction: it is the only catalogue holding whose contents cannot be verified without being destroyed as contents. The Librarian of the Unwritten has ruled, in a memorandum of 11,388 cited more often than read, that the Well "holds nothing and is not empty," a distinction the memorandum does not elaborate and which two subsequent clarifications have failed to resolve.

The Empiricist League, before its dissolution, advanced the view that the Well holds the Twelve Precepts of Observable Phenomena in an unwritten form and that the League's codification was an act of retrieval rather than composition. This claim was examined under the Three Precepts of Causal Integrity and found unverifiable on the ground that no retrieval protocol can distinguish a recovered text from a composed one where neither has been written. The League's surviving members accepted the finding and dispersed.

Scholarly disagreement

The central dispute concerns the Well's relation to the Unwritten Concordance. The Unwritten Concordance Hypothesis, most fully argued in The Clause of Unwritten Authority, holds that the Well is the Concordance's physical seat and that its unwritten provisions are accessible only to those who descend to read rather than to deposit. Against this, the traditionalist position codified in the Precepts of Perpetual Adherence insists that nothing whatsoever may enter the shaft, including a reader, and that the Hypothesis confuses a well with a stairwell.

A third school, associated with the Chamber of Whispered Precepts on Floor 189 and defended against the Dean of Lexical Purity with some vehemence, holds that the Well contains no precepts but only the memory of a recitation, and that the Resonance Well reliably manifests within it. The Solar Plexus Well has formally rejected this application of the manifestation principle as out of scope, and the Ventricular Reading Room has declined to comment.

Access

The Well is approachable only by appointment with the Archivists, in parties of no fewer than two and no more than four. Visitors are asked to leave walking staves at the door, as the transept floor is uneven near the coping and the Censors will not be responsible for a fall. Nothing may be carried past the second rail.
