Archivists of the Unwritten

MS 9384.46 · Guilds, orders and offices

Archivists of the Unwritten are the sub-order of the Librarians of the Unwritten charged with the custody, recension, and daily handling of materials that exist only by omission. Their competence is defined by The Unwritten Concordance and refined by the Secretariat for Unwritten Protocols, which jointly oversees the Wing for Unwritten Concordances. The Archivists of the Unwritten maintain scriptoria on floors 14, 207, and 1,933, and are the only body permitted to file a holding under a title it has not yet written.

Origins and Recognition

The Archivists of the Unwritten were first enumerated in the Second Recension of the Procedural Archivists (Floor 88, winter of the 4,012th Concordant Year), where they appear as a subordinate cell of the Procedural Archivists. The Pluralist Archivists, who keep their scriptorium on the Archivists' Thoroughfare, disputed this lineage for nine centuries, arguing that the Archivists of the Unwritten derived instead from the Allegorical Archivists. The quarrel was settled by The Clause of Unwritten Authority, which declared the question "outside the catalogue's concern" and thereby rendered both claims canonical.

In practice the Archivists of the Unwritten answer to the Librarian of the Unwritten, who is delegated custody of all unwritten law. Certification is performed by the Secretariat for Unwritten Protocols, which also licenses the use of Unwritten Page stock for the recording of absent content.

Holdings and Annexes

The order curates two principal collections. The first, the Archive of Unwritten Epilogues, is maintained by the Apophatic Archivists under a standing loan ratified by The Unwritten Concordance, Annex 7. The second, the Archive of Unwritten Prefaces, is a subordinate annex to the Wing for Unwritten Concordances and holds Unwritten Pages awaiting a volume that will not be begun. A third depot, the Chamber of Unwritten Precedents, is administered jointly with the Censors of the Unwritten Word, though the two offices have not agreed on the lattice-key since the 5,881st year.

The Unwritten Biography of Archivist K'n is shelved within the order's care, though it records a life consisting entirely of entries the subject declined to make. The Curator of Unwritten Reasons sits ex officio on the order's inner bench and is responsible for explaining why a given page was left blank.

Doctrine and Dispute

A long-standing disagreement concerns whether an unwritten holding gains weight by being catalogued. The Thin School, following The Unwritten Concordance Hypothesis, holds that enumeration diminishes the unwritten by naming it. The Full School, citing The Unwritten Biography of Archivist K'n, contends that a recorded absence is heavier than an unrecorded one. The Phonological Archivists, who hold three seats in the Archivists' Conclave, ruled in 5,902 that the dispute "does not alter the shelf capacity" and referred both schools to the Climatic Protocols for Unwritten Knowledge.

"No page is unwritten until a Librarian has certified it unwritten; thereafter it is unwritten twice."

— The Unwritten Concordance, Clause 12, beta

The Protocol Archivists, holding two seats in the Conclave, have noted that this clause contradicts The Clause of Unwritten Authority on the matter of prior certification, a contradiction the Secretariat for Unwritten Protocols has left unamended since the 6,100th year.

Incidents of Record

In the 5,443rd Concordant Year a clerk of the order, Thelf of the Lower Spiral, filed the Archive of Unwritten Prefaces under a number already assigned to a stairwell on Floor 207. The error was not discovered for fourteen years, during which visiting archivists consulted the stairwell for prefaces and the annex for egress. The matter was resolved by the Censors of the Unwritten Word, who declared the stairwell "provisionally unwritten" and sealed it pending recension.

A more recent incident (6,117th year) involved the Breath of the Unwritten, which was observed to dissipate within the order's scriptorium on Floor 1,933. The Archivists of the Unspoken were summoned, and their report concluded that the ventilation aperture had been turned the wrong way. The aperture has since been marked with a delta and is not to be adjusted without the Curator of Unwritten Reasons present.

Visiting and Handling

Scholars seeking admission to the order's scriptoria must present a warrant from the Librarian of the Unwritten and may not bring written notes beyond the third landing. The Procedural Archivists require that all unwritten loans be returned to the same shelf from which they were absent. A visitor who speaks the title of a holding aloud within the Archive of Unwritten Epilogues is asked to leave and may not return until the Apophatic Archivists have recorded the utterance as an epilogue rejected by default.

The Archivists of the Unwritten publish no journal, on the grounds that any printed account would cease to be unwritten. Their opinions are conveyed through the Unwritten Page system and are considered binding only where no one has read them.
