Archive of Unwritten Prefaces
MS 0659.37 · Guilds, orders and offices
Archive of Unwritten Prefaces is a classified doctrinal repository and interdimensional annex housing preliminary materials for non-existent works. It is located within a non-Cartesian annex of Floor 712, codenamed Spiral Omega-14, and is administratively contiguous with but ontologically distinct from The Gallery of Unwritten Prefaces. Its primary mandate, as established by Concordance 44, Article 5, is the systematic custodianship of pretextual matter for the Accretion of the Unwritten.
Administrative Structure
The Archive is jointly overseen by The Librarians of the Unwritten and the Secretariat for Unwritten Protocols, a dual custodianship ratified by Concordance 44, Article 5, Sub-clause γ. This arrangement was formalized in 712-AUC (Anno Unionis Concordantium) following the Schism of the Preliminary, though some foundational Librarians argue the oversight bodies have always existed in a state of complementary contradiction. Day-to-day operations are governed by the Manual of Prefatory Containment, whose most recent revision introduced the controversial "Sigma-7 Buffer Protocols" for interfacing with adjacent epistemological domains, such as the Repository of Conditional Conclusions on Floor 909.
Physical and Ontological Layout
The Archive's architecture is non-linear, consisting of seven concentric rings of shelving that rotate along an axis described as "temporally oblique." Each ring is designated for a class of preface: Ring Alpha houses Voluntary Prefaces (those written for books that were never begun); Ring Beta contains Implied Prefaces (deduced from texts that reference non-existent antecedents); and so forth through to Ring Omega, which is reserved for Recursive Prefaces (prefaces to books about the Archive itself). A secondary, physically discrete holding, the Vault of Unwritten Prefaces, serves as a high-security annex for epistemically volatile materials. A further classified subsection, the Archive of Withdrawn Prefaces, functions as an ontological quarantine zone for invalidated prefaces, designated Repository Theta-14.
Core Holdings and Artifacts
The Archive's most significant holdings include the complete run of Unwritten Pages, drawn from the Archive's own special repository; the disputed Manuscript-Gamma, which posits a missing concordance governing unwritten law; and The Unwritten Biography of Archivist K'n, a 4,000-page preface to a biography of an archivist who may or may not have existed. The Index of Unspoken Prefaces, maintained in the adjacent Well of Unspoken Prefaces, is considered a vital cross-reference tool, though its updates lag approximately 47 standard Tower years behind new acquisitions. A sub-archive, the Archive of Unwritten Books, is administratively subordinated to the main Archive by the aforementioned Concordance 44 clause.
Operational Procedures
Access is restricted to Librarians-Grade-7 or higher bearing a Counter-Sigil of Pre-approval. The standard procedure for introducing a new preface, outlined in Manual Section 12.7, involves a tripartite validation check against the Third and Seventh Concordance standards for ontological coherence, followed by immersion in the Sounds of Unwritten Prefaces for resonance verification. Disputes over classification are adjudicated by citing contradictory passages from the Concordances, most commonly between Concordance 19 (which privileges authorial intent, even if hypothetical) and Concordance 31 (which privileges structural completeness of the preface as a standalone artifact).
Scholarly Disputes
The principal doctrinal conflict concerns the ontological status of the Archive's contents. The "Substantivist School," led by the Secretariat, argues that a properly catalogued preface accretes reality, making its subject de facto real within the Tower's epistemic bounds. The "Formalist School," championed by certain Librarians of the Unwritten, maintains that the Archive merely catalogs potentialities, and that reality is not conferred by filing. This debate is further complicated by the existence of The Lost Chapter of the Unwritten Concordance, a fragmentary text some believe would resolve the matter, but which remains uncatalogued—and thus, by some definitions, unwritten.
Inter-Archive Relations
Beyond its administrative links to its subsidiary Vault and Gallery, the Archive maintains formal exchange protocols with repositories dealing with related non-existential categories. These include the aforementioned Repository of Conditional Conclusions and the Archive of Unwritten Books. Material transfers require passage through Buffer Sigma-7 and are logged in the Register of Trans-Potential Transfers. Unauthorized cross-contamination between, for example, an Unwritten Preface and a Conditional Conclusion is considered a Class-3 Epistemic Hazard and triggers immediate quarantine procedures in the Archive of Withdrawn Prefaces.
