Aerial Causeways
MS 1331.10 · Places and structures
The Aerial Causeways constitute the primary arterial network for vertical transit between the peripheral structures and subsidiary spires of the Tower that are not directly integrated into its central massif. Their maintenance and the regulation of traffic upon them fall under the jurisdiction of the Clerks of the Periphery, as stipulated in Seventh Concordance, Annex 4, Clause 11.
Design and Construction
The Causeways are fashioned from a substance catalogued as 'attenuated basalt,' a material whose structural integrity is inversely proportional to the density of the local informational field. This results in causeways that are most stable in regions of high conceptual ambiguity, such as the approaches to the Spire of the Silent Archive. Standard width is precisely 7.5 Librarian paces (approximately 5.8 metres), with guardrails consisting of interwoven citations from the Fifth Concordance that glow faintly under conditions of procedural dispute. Construction and repair are overseen by the Guild of Insubstantial Masons, whose charter permits them to work only during the monthly 'Interval of Unrecorded Hours.'
Operational Protocols
Transit is governed by a complex system of priority and passage rites. Priority is granted, in descending order, to: couriers bearing amendments to a Concordance; carts transporting non-existent specimens for initial cataloguing; and personnel engaged in the routine calibration of ontological anchors. All traffic must be logged in the Ledger of Transient Mass prior to embarkation, a process that involves the traveler submitting a brief, written negation of their own journey's necessity. A persistent scholarly disagreement, referenced in the footnotes of Clause 302, concerns whether this log-entry ritual is a practical safety measure or a metaphysical prerequisite for the Causeway's continued existence.
The Causeways are not uniformly contiguous. Sections may become 'conceptually saturated' and temporarily impassable, a state indicated by the guardrail citations shifting from a steady glow to a rapid, strobing flicker. During these periods, which can last anywhere from seventeen minutes to six days, alternative routes via the Peripheral Causeways must be utilized, though these are notoriously prone to recursive looping.
Notable Junctions and Termini
The most heavily trafficked junction is the Crossing of Provisional Realities, where the eastern branch servicing the Spire of the Silent Archive meets the northern spur leading to the Archive of Unwritten Prefaces. This junction is monitored by a permanent kiosk staffed by a Clerk of the Periphery, whose duty is to resolve right-of-way conflicts by consulting a dedicated, palm-sized edition of the Seventh Concordance known as the 'Junctionary Codex.'
The western terminus of the network connects to the Balcony of Unfinished Arguments, a platform that exists in a state of permanent architectural revision. The southern branches, in contrast, simply fray and dissipate into the ambient archival mist, a feature that some cartographers argue is not a terminus at all but a type of 'existential buffer zone.'
Incident Logging and Maintenance Anomalies
All notable events are recorded in the Register of Aerial Anomalies. Common entries include 'spontaneous calcification of the attenuate basalt,' 'guardrail citations reciting themselves in reverse chronological order,' and 'the manifestation of non-scheduled foot traffic.' The latter, often logged as 'Phantom Processions,' are to be ignored per Standing Order 47-B, unless they attempt to submit an entry to the Ledger of Transient Mass, at which point a full incident report is required.
Maintenance is complicated by the material's properties. Repairs conducted with excessive certainty cause the basalt to become brittle and prone to 'conceptual shattering,' while repairs made with insufficient conviction result in the Causeway segment becoming intangible. The Guild of Insubstantial Masons therefore trains its apprentices in a precise emotional discipline of 'focused ambivalence.'
Role in Larger Archival Functions
Beyond mere transit, the Aerial Causeways serve as a critical pressure valve for the Tower's informational ecology. They allow for the physical separation of mutually antagonistic catalogical principles—such as the 'principle of exhaustive inclusion' housed in the Spire of the Silent Archive and the 'doctrine of elegant omission' practiced in the West Wing Annex—preventing their direct confrontation within the main Tower corpus. In this capacity, they are not merely infrastructure but active, stabilizing components of the archive's epistemic architecture, their stability meticulously balanced against the conceptual tensions they were built to bridge.
