Sub Level 7
MS 4922.11 · Places and structures
Sub-Level 7 is categorized under Access Designation 07-WS as an Acoustical Anomaly Repository within the primary stack of the Western Spire. It is best known for housing the primary collection of the Silent Census of Sub-Level 9 and as the designated administrative hub for the analysis of the Hum of the Depths. The sub-level operates under the direct purview of the Office of Ephemeral Affairs.
Layout and Infrastructure
Sub-Level 7 is arranged in a single, expansive chamber measuring 120 meters by 85 meters, with a low ceiling vault of 4.2 meters. The walls, floor, and ceiling are uniformly clad in Type-7 Acoustic Dampening Tiles, a composite material developed specifically for this environment and classified under Ordinance 33.12a of the Twelfth Adjustment of the Auxiliary Pendulum Network. A grid of 144 suspended isolation booths, each 2 meters square, occupies the central floor space. These booths are used for individual study of audio records and are connected by a network of rubberized walkways to minimize vibrational interference.
The chamber’s northern wall is dominated by the Master Resonance Array, a bank of 30 harmonically-tuned brass horns, each pointing toward a corresponding input aperture in the wall that leads to the primary ventilation shafts connecting to lower levels. Officially, this array passively monitors foundational resonance. Unofficially, it is cited in several expedition logs as the most likely point of origin for the low-frequency oscillations first formally documented during the Silent Census of Sub-Level 9.
Primary Holdings
The core archival duty of Sub-Level 7 is the preservation and analysis of materials related to sub-basement acoustics. Its principal holdings include:
- The complete wax-cylinder recordings and annotated spectrographs from the Silent Census of Sub-Level 9 (A.Y. 209), stored in vacuum-sealed cabinets along the eastern wall.
- The original field notes and personal logs of Alban of the Thirty-Sixth Landing, lead archivist of the Silent Census.
- Seventeen folios of Glossolalic Script developed during the Census, which are stored separately in humidity-controlled cases due to their disputed status as either linguistic artifact or resonant artifact.
- A sealed vault containing the single known sample of Phonolithic Conglomerate, Type 9, retrieved from Sub-Level 9 prior to its formal closure under Concordance 442.
Administrative Function
Beyond its archival role, Sub-Level 7 serves as the procedural gateway for deeper acoustic investigations. Per Concordance 187 (Clause 6), any proposed expedition to study infrasound phenomena below Level -15 must file a Statement of Acoustic Intent with the Clerk-in-Residence on Sub-Level 7. This office is also responsible for maintaining the encrypted ledger correlating findings from Sub-Level 33 with the raw data from Sub-Level 9, though the physical ledger itself is stored in Sub-Level 44 for security.
The sub-level is permanently staffed by a rotation of three Resonant Archivists, a position created by the Librariansreconciliation of 1901 held on the Iron Catwalk. Their primary duty is to calibrate the Master Resonance Array weekly and document any deviations in its baseline hum, which are then filed as Appendix C to the monthly report of the Office of Ephemeral Affairs.
Scholarly Disputes
The nature of Sub-Level 7’s core collection is a point of ongoing contention. The mainstream position, upheld by the Office of Ephemeral Affairs, is that the sub-level is a neutral repository for data. A vocal minority of archivists, however, argue that the concentrated storage of resonant artifacts—particularly the original Census recordings and the Phonolithic sample—has caused Sub-Level 7 to become an active sympathetic resonator. This faction, often associated with researchers from the Vivarium of Conditional Forms, cites the documented phenomenon of "bleed-through," where low-frequency sounds not present on the original wax cylinders have been detected in later playback sessions within the isolation booths.
This dispute is further complicated by the ambiguous wording of Concordance 442, which ordered the cessation of "active auditory solicitation" in Sub-Level 9. Critics of the mainstream position argue that the continuous monitoring conducted on Sub-Level 7 constitutes a form of solicitation by proxy, and that the sub-level should be reclassified from a Repository to a Conditional Observation Zone, a designation that would trigger a host of restrictive protocols. The Office has repeatedly denied these petitions, most recently in A.Y. 311, citing a lack of "definitive causal linkage" (Decision 87-311).
Related Collections
Findings from Sub-Level 7 are regularly cross-referenced with materials in the Galleries of Attenuated Light (which study light-based phenomena in low-energy states) and the Archive of Unwritten Prefaces on Sub-Level 909-A. The rationale for this linkage, as stated in Inter-Depository Memo 45-d, is that both infrasound and unwritten text occupy a "domain of potentiality rather than actualized expression." No formal collaborative studies have been authorized, though inter-depository loan requests for the Resonance Field Analysis of Sub-Level 9 (A.Y. 209) are frequent.
