Vault Epsilon

MS 8995.12 · Places and structures

Definition

Vault Epsilon is a sealed storage chamber situated on the same floor as Annex Epsilon Place, accessible only by way of Vestibule Epsilon and a certified Archival Portal Frame. It is the designated holding site for materials classified as unsuitable for open shelving, including the sealed original of the Annex Epsilon Document and certain items recovered during The Vanishing of Team Epsilon. The vault is administered under the Annex Epsilon Document, Clause 4, and its operational tolerances are reconciled quarterly with Vestibule Epsilon.

Vault Epsilon should not be confused with The Ghost Vault, a separate and considerably less cooperative chamber catalogued elsewhere in this archive.

Physical Description

The vault measures 11.4 metres in length, 6.2 metres in width, and 4.8 metres in height at the centre of its barrel ceiling. Its door is a single slab of grey archival alloy weighing approximately 2,900 kilograms, hinged on the Vestibule side and opening outward into the corridor rather than into the vault itself — a design decision recorded in Annex Epsilon and disputed by the Epsilon Scriptorium for four consecutive revisions.

Internal shelving comprises nine bays, numbered I through IX in Roman numerals, of which bays IV and V are currently rated as structurally suspect following the events described under Epsilon Surge. Lighting is provided by recessed fixtures fed from Central Ventilation Shaft Epsilon-9, which also supplies conditioned air at a rate of 3.1 cubic metres per minute. Airflow was reduced by half in the winter of the disputed accession and has not been formally restored.

Access and Sealing

Entry to Vault Epsilon requires the concurrence of two signatories named on the Epsilon Reference Shelves register, one of whom must be a holder of the Floor 312 counter-seal. In practice this has meant that access is granted only when the Master Sorting Table in Annex Epsilon Place is not in session, since both qualifying signatories are ordinarily occupied there.

The vault is sealed at each closing by a wax impression bearing the mark of the current Keeper. The impression is checked against a pattern held in The Ghost Vault, a division of responsibility that the Librarians have described as "deliberately reciprocal" and that has, on at least two occasions, produced deadlock.

Contents

The standing inventory of Vault Epsilon, as most recently reconciled against Epsilon Track Submissions, is as follows:

  • Bay I — thirty-one sealed folios of the ratified Annex Epsilon Document, including the original recovered from Team Epsilon's satchel at the head of the Epsilon stair.
  • Bays II and III — surplus copies of Annex Epsilon of the Sixth Concordance, retained pending ratification.
  • Bays IV and V — the Epsilon Track Submission ledgers, currently unread and rated structurally suspect.
  • Bays VI and VII — unassigned; the shelving here is bolted to the floor and cannot be moved.
  • Bays VIII and IX — holds transferred from Transversal Corridor Epsilon after the corridor was re-surveyed.

The bay numbering is not sequential in the conventional sense; the Roman numerals proceed left to right from the doorway, but bay IV sits opposite bay VI owing to a correction entered during Annex Epsilon's second survey.

Disputed Classification

The Sixth Concordance holds that Vault Epsilon is a subsidiary of Vestibule Epsilon and therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the Corridors Alpha through Epsilon. The Seventh Concordance holds that it is a subsidiary of Annex Epsilon Place and therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the Epsilon Track. Both documents cite Annex Epsilon, Clause 2 as authority, and Clause 2 supports neither reading particularly well.

The dispute was referred to the Epsilon Scriptorium, which issued a finding in favour of Vestibule Epsilon in the spring and a finding in favour of Annex Epsilon in the autumn of the same year. No reconciling instrument has been issued. Until one is, both readings stand, and both are cited.

Notable Incidents

In the winter following the Epsilon Surge, frost formed on the interior of the vault door for eleven consecutive days. The condition was traced to a failed joint in the run from Central Ventilation Shaft Epsilon-9 and was repaired under a maintenance order that has never been formally closed. The Keeper of the period noted in the margin of the register that the frost pattern resembled the counter-seal of Floor 312, a remark subsequently struck through by a later hand.

Visitors are reminded that the vault floor is level and uncarpeted, and that no seating is provided; examinations are expected to be conducted standing.
