Eastern Vestibule

MS 2037.60 · Places and structures

The Eastern Vestibule is a designated receiving and triage station for materials entering the archival stream from all eastern approaches, formally defined under Clause 7-Gamma of the Third and Twelfth Concordances. It is distinct from, though often conflated with, the principal administrative vestibule of the same floor, and serves as the procedural predecessor to the Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy. Its primary operational period is recorded as Epoch 14,201 to Epoch 14,745 (Intercalary Reckoning), after which its functions were largely absorbed by the Thirteenth and Unspoken Consensus Vestibules.

Location and Architecture

Situated on the inner curve of the Great Eastern Spiral where it intersects with the service ducts of the Eastern Attenuation Conduit, the Eastern Vestibule occupies a semicircular chamber of approximately 2,400 square cubits. Its western wall is dominated by Aperture 7-Alpha, the brass-armed rotating carousel which originally housed the Provisional Ledgers. The floor is paved with alternating slabs of grey basalt and a porous, sound-dampening limestone unique to this sector, a feature noted in the Procedural Ledger of the Eastern Aspect as a "mitigation against the cacophony of provisionality." The sole permanent egress is the Eastern Stair, Gamma Corridor (Spiral 14), though temporary access to the Eastern Auxiliary Ladder was permitted during the Schism of the Eastern Stacks for expedited material transfer.

Function and Procedure

As the initial point of intake for all unsorted, unverified, or epistemically unstable submissions from the eastern stacks and survey teams, the Vestibule's mandate was one of "provisional admission." Clerks, known as Attendants-Provisional, would perform a sixty-two-point assessment based on the now-defunct Index of Fleeting Veracity. Items deemed to have a "cohesion potential" above 0.4 were logged in the Provisional Ledgers and assigned a triage vector—typically towards the Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy for deeper classification. Those below the threshold were either diverted to the Vestibule of Unanswered Calls or, in periods of high throughput, placed into a state of "attenuated hold" within the adjoining conduits. The most famous expedition to depart from its gates was the Partial Survey led by Archivist-Provisional Kaelen, whose initial findings filled seventeen volumes of the Ledgers before being superseded.

The Provisional Ledgers Controversy

The Vestibule's operational heart was the set of forty-seven folios known as the Provisional Ledgers. Their binding, described in inventories as "indeterminate leather," and the progressive fading of their inks became a significant scholarly dispute. The Twelfth Concordance (Annex Δ) states the fading was a deliberate feature, "a mechanical allegory for the decay of un-curated fact." However, the later Addendum to the Procedural Ledger of the Eastern Aspect argues it was a simple chemical defect in the iron-gall ink allocated to the Vestibule by the Vestibule of Measure in Epoch 14,300. This discrepancy led to a protracted, low-grade conflict between the vestibular clerks and the measure-apportioners, often called the "Ink Stalemate," which was only resolved when the Ledgers were retired to static display.

Decommissioning and Legacy

By Epoch 14,745, systemic delays in the triage process had created a backlog of over 30,000 provisional items, causing a measurable "conceptual seepage" into the Eastern Stack Antechamber Atelier. The Fourteenth Concordance (Clause 801) officially redistributed its functions: intake was streamlined through the newly expanded Thirteenth Vestibule, while qualitative assessment fell to the Vestibule of Unspoken Consensus. The Eastern Vestibule itself was placed into a "state of ceremonial standby." The carousel of Aperture 7-Alpha still rotates once per circuit, and the Provisional Ledgers remain on display, though they are now classified as a historical holding rather than a working instrument. A small plaque, added in Epoch 14,901, reads: "Here commenced the catalogue of the almost-known."

Current Status and Access

Today, the Eastern Vestibule is maintained by a single Custodian of Legacy Protocol, a position currently held by Attendant Lira. Access for scholarly review requires a form S-14A, approved by both the Vestibule of Measure and the office of the Keeper of the Eastern Spiral. Its primary scholarly value lies not in its architecture but in the frozen procedural snapshot it provides. The preserved Ledgers offer a unique corpus for studying the taxonomy of uncertainty, and the vestibule's floor is occasionally used for training novices in the identification of "provisional attributes" before they are assigned to active intake vestibules. Its spectral opposite, in both function and fate, is often considered to be the Vestibule Epsilon's Shadow.
