The Cabinet of Unfound References

MS 8166.43 · Practices and doctrines

The Cabinet of Unfound References is a five-drawer index cabinet of grey-enamelled steel, held on Floor 307: The Cabinet of Echoes, which contains no documents. It is not empty in the ordinary sense: each drawer contains a full complement of punched catalogue cards, all of which refer to holdings that have never existed, and none of which may be removed. The Cabinet is administered as the reference counterpart to the Cabinet of Unclaimed Conclusions, and the two are conventionally described together in the Register of Paired Cabinets and Their Offsets as "the conclusion nobody reached and the citation nobody followed." Its designation in the Third Concordance is Unit 307-Gamma/Ref.

Construction and markings

The Cabinet stands 1.42 m and is fitted with a brass card-rail of the older pattern, struck in three places with the seal of the Scriptorium of Corrected Labels. Each drawer bears a class letter, from alpha to epsilon, but the order of the drawers is not the order of the letters; the Director Agnes Corvel established this in 3161 by the simple expedient of opening all five and reading the plates, an operation the previous custodian had declined to perform for eleven years. Drawers alpha and epsilon open with some difficulty and have been noted as such on the maintenance schedule since the Winter of Seventeen Misshelvings, when the rail was reset and never quite returned true.

Contents

The cards are of a uniform stock with three rulings, and the ink is the brown of the Standard Ink Schedule, now superseded. Every card carries a call number, a title, a shelf and a date of accession, and the call numbers are well formed: they are of the shape used throughout Floor 307, they sort correctly, and they cite apertures and spirals that exist. What the titles describe does not exist, has not existed, and in the ruling of In re: The Paradoxical Filing Cabinet (3166) is held never to have required existence in order to be indexed. The following is drawn from the drawer-alpha inventory of the Archival Office of Countersignature:

  • Card a-0014 — The Sixth Volume of a Work Published in Four.
  • Card a-0027 — Errata to the Errata of the Melisen Ledger, cited to a leaf that conforms to no ledger in the Stacks.
  • Card a-0041 — The Chair's Apology, 41 pp., no author.
  • Card a-0063 — On the Proper Care of the Cabinet of Unfound References, itself unfound.

Card a-0063 has been the subject of three separate requisitions and one formal complaint. The complaint, lodged by a junior clerk of the Office of Shelf-Truth identified in the record only as R., argued that a manual for the care of the Cabinet which the Cabinet's own contents prove to be absent constitutes an instruction that cannot be obeyed and therefore an instruction not to be issued. The Office declined to hear it on the grounds that the card had been issued, correctly, and that what it said was not its concern.

Etymology and the Antipode

The name is not, as is often supposed, descriptive. The Compendium of Unfound Places (3rd Edition) records that Lemuel coined "unfound reference" during the sensory encounter that first documented Vellichor's Antipode, and used it to mean a reference which, once followed, finds nothing but which by having been followed demonstrates that something was there to be missed. On this reading the Cabinet does not contain citations to nothing; it contains citations to the absence of things, which is a different and more defensible class of holding. The wording passed into the Catalogue without revision and has caused difficulty ever since.

Controversies

The question of the drawers

The Fourth Concordance, Annex 9, holds that a cabinet is defined by its drawers and that a cabinet whose drawers contain only descriptions of absent holdings is a cabinet of descriptions, not of holdings, and should be recatalogued under the loose descriptive class. The Ninth Concordance, Article 2, rejects this in terms that the editors of the Digest of Rejected Readings have declined to print in full, observing only that "the drawers are drawers and the holdings are holdings, and a Concordance may not rename a thing by arguing about it." Both remain in force. The Bureau of Loose Descriptions has accordingly kept the Cabinet on its register without ever inspecting it, a position it describes as correct and has held since 3158.

The absent inkwell

Disagreement also persists over the inkwell found in the Cabinet's top drawer at first survey, which is recorded in the accession note but is not part of the Cabinet's declared contents and has never been catalogued. Silas Thorne, Custodian of the Referential Register, maintained to the end of his tenure that an object without a card is not a holding but an accident, and left it where it lay. His successor's view is that a cabinet whose business is unfound references cannot look away from a thing that has been found, and that the inkwell should be carded. It has not been carded. The inkwell is dry.

Harmonic disturbance

A preliminary sounding taken in the Eastern Vestibule during the Incident of the Unfound Chime returned an anomalous reading consistent with a resonance of 41 cycle-parts, the figure of card a-0041's page count, and the sounding was discontinued. The Office of Resonance Accounts has ruled that the correspondence is coincidental and that no further sounding be taken without countersignature. The ruling notes in passing that the Clerk who requested the sounding had already been transferred to the Stairwell of Reasons Given Later and could not be reached for comment.

Consultation of the Cabinet is permitted by written warrant from the Office of Countersignature and by no other means. Cards may be read under supervision in the reading gallery but may not be copied, summarised aloud, or carried as far as the lift. Visits are limited to forty minutes, the Cabinet is closed to readers on the last rest day of each month, and the lower drawer is not to be opened in the presence of anyone who has recently been cited.
