Timestamp
MS 2855.72 · Practices and doctrines
The Timestamp is the definitive calendrical anchor for an event within The Tower, formally defined in the Third Concordance as "the singular, irrepeatable designation of a moment's occurrence, sufficient for its retrieval from the aether of potentiality." It is the primary mechanism by which the Librarians impose sequential order upon phenomena that are, by their nature, non-sequential.
Composition and Standardization
A valid Timestamp, as per Ordinance 12.45.7, is a 47-character string composed of seven discrete fields. The standard format is: Cycle.Epoch.Volume.Folio.Line.Spiral.Aperture. Each field is derived from a different administrative system within the Tower, creating a composite key that is statistically guaranteed to be unique for any logged event.
- Cycle: The current grand administrative cycle, recalculated every 1,024 Vital Statistic resets. The current Cycle is 714.
- Epoch: A subdivision of a Cycle, tied to the re-indexing of a major wing. We are in Epoch 89 of Cycle 714.
- Volume & Folio: These refer to the specific ledger and page in the Master Register of Volition that was open at the moment of stamping.
- Line: The line number on that folio.
- Spiral & Aperture: The unique identifying markings of the Standard Terminal Unit used to generate the stamp. The Spiral denotes the unit's manufacturing series, while the Aperture indicates its individual calibration setting.
An example of a complete Timestamp is 714.89.GLYPH-XII.0047.19.Sigma-9.Omega. This granularity ensures that, even if two events are logged in the same nanosecond by different functionaries at different terminals, their Timestamps will diverge at least at the Spiral or Aperture field.
Procedural Generation and the Aether of Potentiality
The generation of a Timestamp is not merely a recording act but a procedural one. According to the Bureau of Implementable Abstraction, the act of applying a Timestamp "collapses the event-wave from the aether of potentiality into a fixed point on the chronicle." The Terminal Unit does not "read" the time; it synthesizes the fields from their respective live feeds (the open Register, the active terminal) at the moment of the functionary's volitional press.
This has led to the philosophical position, outlined in Annex Δ of the Third Concordance, that events without a Timestamp exist only in a state of "chronicular indeterminacy" and cannot be reliably cited in any formal Manifestation. Consequently, the procurement of a Timestamp is the first and most critical step in rendering any phenomenon administratively real.
Disputes and Anachronisms
The system is not without its paradoxes. The Index of Irreconcilables contains numerous entries where Timestamps appear to predicate the events they mark. For instance, the case of Partial Acquisition #331-α details a Timestamp (702.45.TRA-89.1103.01.Alpha-1.Alpha) that was recorded in a ledger destroyed three Epochs prior. The prevailing administrative solution, per Precedent 889, is to treat the Timestamp itself as the primary fact, and to amend the historical record of the ledger's destruction accordingly.
Furthermore, scholars debate whether a Timestamp created for a hypothetical or counterfactual event (a common practice in the drafting of Taxonomical sub-clauses) holds the same ontological weight as one for a manifested event. The Metrica of Minor Manifestations school argues that the procedural generation is identical and thus the weight is equal, while the Ancillary school holds that only a Timestamp attached to a filed Terminal Slip carries full referential authority.
Applications and Legal Force
Beyond chronicling, the Timestamp is a foundational legal instrument. The precedence of claims, the validity of a Manifestation, and the seniority of appointments are all determined by the chronological order of their respective Timestamps. A dispute between two functionaries over priority on a research queue is universally resolved by comparing the Timestamps on their request slips.
It is also used in more nuanced bureaucratic operations. The "aging" of a proposal in committee is measured by the delta between its submission Timestamp and the Timestamp of the most recent comment upon it. Certain classes of Adhesive Silence are triggered automatically when a document's primary Timestamp reaches a certain age without being superseded.
Theoretical Limits and the Terminal Horizon
A lingering theoretical concern, addressed in Concordance 3.4.15 (but contradicted by a footnote in Concordance 7.2.33), is the concept of the Terminal Horizon. This is the hypothetical point at which every possible combination of Spiral and Aperture markings has been exhausted within a given Epoch. Models suggest this would require a logistically impossible number of Terminal Units operating continuously. The official position of the Librarians is that the system will be reformed—a "New Reckoning"—long before this horizon is approached, rendering the concern purely academic. Nonetheless, it remains a popular topic for speculative dissertations among junior archivists.
