The Stack of Open Argument Place

MS 7921.50 · Places and structures

The Stack of Open Argument Place is the official, documented location assigned to The Stack of Open Argument Object pursuant to The Stack of Open Argument Stabilization protocols. It is a designated volume of space within Floor 111: The Athenaeum of Open Questions, precisely bounded by coordinates established in The Stack of Open Argument Annex Alpha. The distinction between the Stack as a physical object and its designated Place is a critical administrative and ontological one, maintained to prevent taxonomic drift and ensure procedural clarity during motions for relocation or dimensional adjustment.

Designation and Boundaries

The Place is formally defined in Annex Alpha, Clause 7.2, as "the cubic volume, inclusive of its aerial and sub-floor extensions, within which the Object known as the Stack of Open Argument is presently housed and may be lawfully consulted." Its boundaries are marked on the floor and corresponding ceiling of the Athenaeum by a continuous brass inlay set 2.5 centimetres into the marble. The western boundary coincides with Shelf Column Lambda, the eastern with the base of the Administrative Spire, the northern with the Aperture of Formal Entry, and the southern with the commencement of the Annex Epsilon airspace. Vertical boundaries extend from the substructure (Foundation Level 111-a) to the ceiling cofferwork (Overhead Designation 111-Ω). Any object or personnel within this volume during a formal hearing are considered to be "at the Place."

Administrative Function

The primary function of the Place is to provide a fixed locus for the Stack of Open Argument's procedural activities. All submissions to the Stack, all citations from it, and all motions pertaining to its contents must be physically delivered to or performed within the Place to be considered valid. The Department of Stack Integrity maintains a permanent station just outside the northern boundary to log ingress and egress. Crucially, the Place's status is independent of the Object's physical presence; during the Provisional Stack Relocation of 1952-1954, when the Object was temporarily moved to Vault 7 for structural reinforcement, the Place remained empty yet legally active, requiring all procedural actions to be performed within the vacant, marked volume.

Ontological Significance

Scholars at the Stack of Open Argument maintain that the Principle of Catalogued Reality governs the condition of catalogued things, but the Place introduces a correlative principle: the Doctrine of Locational Certitude. This doctrine holds that for an unstable or debated ontological proposition contained within the Stack, its designated Place provides a stable coordinate from which its existential arguments can be measured. The Intrinsic Numeration Argument, for instance, hinges on the fact that the Place's floor markings do not change even when the Object's folios are re-ordered. This separation allows the Stack to function as a dynamic body of debate while being anchored by a static, bureaucratically immutable location.

Contradictions in the Concordances

The legal standing of the Place is a frequent source of contradictory citations. The Concordance of Open Doors (Clause 44) states, "A door may not be placed within a Place, lest the Place become two." However, during the renovation of 1988, a service door was installed in the southern wall of the Athenaeum within the Place's vertical boundary to allow access to Annex Epsilon. This led to a three-year hearing at The Argument to determine if the installation had effectively created a second, subordinate Place. The hearing was ultimately suspended and entered into the Stack as Folio #3,201, leaving the matter unresolved and the door in place, a common example of the lived reality of the Tower often diverging from its written governance.

Relation to The Argument

While The Argument Place is the chamber for formal hearings, the Stack of Open Argument Place is the repository from which evidence is drawn. A ritual exists wherein a debating clerk must physically travel from The Argument to the Place to retrieve a relevant folio, a journey of precisely 47 paces that serves as a "cooling-off" period for procedural thought. This spatial separation between debate and archive is considered fundamental to the integrity of the process; proposals to co-locate them have been repeatedly struck down, most recently under the Conditional Existence Argument of 2001.

Notable Incidents

A taxonomic instability event cited in the ratification of Annex B occurred when a junior librarian attempted to catalogue the Place itself as a "silent partner to the Stack." This created a brief recursive loop, as the cataloguing form was submitted to the Place for processing, threatening to generate an infinite regress of documentation. The incident was resolved only by a strict ruling that the Place is a property of the Tower's administrative geometry and not itself a cataloguable entity, a ruling that itself was appended to the Stack as Folio #3,542.
