The Stack of Open Argument Object
MS 6504.43 · Objects and instruments
The Stack of Open Argument Object refers to the physical, curated collection of unresolved motions for ontological suspension, formally housed in Floor 111: The Athenaeum of Open Questions. It is distinct from the administrative process of The Stack of Open Argument Stabilization and the procedural chamber of The Argument. The Object consists of 3,742 distinct folios (as of the last full audit, Cycle 842), each containing a single proposition deemed irresolvable under current Principle of Catalogued Reality frameworks. Its integrity is maintained by the Department of Stack Integrity.
Physical Description and Housing
The Object is a vertical stack occupying a dedicated cylindrical chamber in the Athenaeum. Each folio is a sheet of vellum, 0.75 meters wide and 1.2 meters tall, suspended from a brass rod. The rods are affixed to a central, non-rotating spindle, allowing individual folios to be pivoted for reading without disturbing the overall order. The stack rises approximately 42 meters from the chamber floor. A network of catwalks, ladders, and pneumatic message tubes surrounds it, facilitating access for librarians and auditors. The chamber's atmosphere is maintained at a constant 16°C and 45% humidity per Concordance 711, Annex D (Preservation of Unresolved States).
Content and Admission Criteria
A folio enters the Stack of Open Argument Object only after a formal hearing in The Argument concludes without a definitive verdict from the Committee for Ontological Review. The proposition must satisfy the Conditional Existence Argument test, demonstrating that its truth or falsity cannot be ascertained without potentially destabilizing adjacent catalogued realities. Classic examples include "The Eighth Day of the Week" and "The Sound of a Vacuum." Once admitted, the folio is assigned a sequential position based on the date and time of the hearing's suspension, though its content is subject to the ongoing analytical protocols of Stabilization.
Curatorial Protocols
The Object is not static. The Department of Stack Integrity performs weekly "gentle agitation," a process of lightly shaking the entire spindle assembly to prevent folios from adhering to one another—a condition known as "argumentative conflation." Every third cycle, a random folio is selected for "lateral review," where its proposition is re-evaluated against current Principle of Catalogued Reality interpretations. No folio has ever been permanently removed through this process, though seventeen have been temporarily relocated to the Sealed Stack during periods of acute taxonomic instability.
The Intrinsic Numeration Dispute
A persistent scholarly debate, known as the Intrinsic Numeration Argument, concerns whether the sequential order of the folios possesses semantic weight. The traditionalist school, led by the late Archivist Aris of the West Stack, holds that the order is merely administrative. The reformist school, based largely in the The Eastern Stack Antechamber Atelier, argues that adjacency influences the "argumentative field" of each proposition, citing the noted resonance between folios #842 ("The Color of Silence") and #843 ("The Geometry of Forgetting"). This dispute is itself considered a candidate for future inclusion in the Stack.
Notable Relocation Events
The Object has been moved only once in recorded history, during the Provisional Stack Relocation (1952-1954). This was necessitated by a subsidence event on Floor 111 that threatened the chamber's structural integrity. The relocation was conducted under a special dispensation from the Court of Unseen Precedents and is cited in Concordance 889 as the benchmark for handling existential hazards to archival objects. The operation took 22 months, during which time all hearings in The Argument were suspended.
Ontological Status and Influence
As a catalogued entity, the Stack of Open Argument Object is real within the Tower. Its influence is operationalized through the Principle of Catalogued Reality: the very act of curating an unresolved question is held to stabilize the question's potential answers, preventing them from collapsing into paradox. The Object thus functions as a regulatory mass, absorbing ontological uncertainty that might otherwise perturb the Tower's epistemological foundations. Its continued expansion—averaging 4.2 new folios per cycle—is monitored by the Librarians as a key metric of conceptual frontier stability.
