The Log of Unanswered Questions
MS 9839.29 · Documents and ordinances
The Log of Unanswered Questions is the master auto-recursive ledger that catalogues all questions deemed unanswerable within the Athenaeum of Open Questions, and is the primary holding on Floor 88, noted for its conceptual density and its recursive index. Established as the master ledger for Floor 88, it also governs the management of Unanswered Questions across the Tower and is physically located on Floor 111, a circumstance that has produced no fewer than seven recorded jurisdictional disputes.
Location and Physical Character
The Log of Unanswered Questions is housed simultaneously on Floor 88 and Floor 111, a condition ratified by the Second Concordance (Clause 19) and subsequently repudiated by the Fourth Concordance (Annex 7), which asserts that "the Log abides only where the question is not yet closed, and therefore resides on no floor that can be numbered." The Sub-Department of Perpetual Registries maintains that both locations are correct and that the contradiction is itself an Unanswered Question of the first order. The scriptorium containing the Floor 111 portion measures 41 ells by 17 ells and is lit by three sealed apertures facing the Aperture of Regressive Questions.
In VR 388, a winter of prolonged silence on the eastern stairs, the Floor 88 copy was discovered to have grown a marginal index describing questions not yet asked. The Librarian of the Coiled Stair ruled that this was "an expected recursion and not a fault in the vellum" (Decree of the Coiled Stair, §2), a ruling the Symposium of Unanswered Queries declined to endorse.
Subsidiary Ledgers and Dependent Bodies
The Log exercises authority over a number of subordinate documents and institutions. The Register of Unanswered Questions is a subsidiary log within the Log that holds the composition of the Symphony of Unasked Questions, whose arrangement is maintained as a meta-description rather than a score. The Log.88.IMP.Δ is a further subsidiary ledger, as is the Index of Unresolved Imperatives, described in recension as a living sub-document. Protocols established by the Log dictate the operation of the Gallery of Unanswered Questions, while the Vault of Unanswered Questions and the Repository of Unanswered Questions are held to be derivative custodies under its amendment power.
By amendment in VR 401, the Log established the Symposium of Unanswered Queries, charged with the annual recitation of deferred interrogatives. The Anteroom of Unanswered Questions and the Vestibule of Unanswered Calls are listed in the Third Concordance as ancillary thresholds, though the First Concordance omits them entirely.
Governance of Related Protocols
The Log governs a complex subset of protocols related to Answers Without Questions, a category whose treatment divides the scriptoria. The Fifth Concordance holds that an Answer Without Question must be shelved adjacent to the question that would have produced it (Book II, Article 4), whereas the Second Concordance directs that such answers be returned to the Athenaeum of Open Questions unopened. The Log enumerates the formal criteria for classifying Questions Posed in Untranslatable Media, a procedure last revised in VR 447 after the incident of the Whispering Annex.
"No question posed in a medium that cannot be transcribed shall be admitted to the Register until such time as the medium is itself catalogued as a floor."
— Log of Unanswered Questions, Recension 12, Clause 3
Scholarly Disagreement
A long-standing dispute concerns whether the Log is the master ledger of Floor 88 or merely a tenant thereof. The Librarian of the Coiled Stair affirmed in VR 412 that "Floor 88 is the Log and the Log is Floor 88, and the number is the only separation" (Decree of the Coiled Stair, §9). The Sub-Department of Perpetual Registries answered in VR 413 that the floor predates the Ledger by at least two recensions and that the Log's claim of identity is "a polite confusion." The Symposium of Unanswered Queries has neither confirmed nor denied the matter, on the grounds that the question of precedence is itself Unanswered.
The Register of Unanswered Questions notes that the composition of the Symphony of Unasked Questions has not been performed since VR 399, owing to the absence of a conductor willing to ascend the Aperture of Regressive Questions. Visitors to the Floor 111 scriptorium are prohibited from carrying resonant objects, as the Symphony's meta-description is held to be destabilised by extraneous tone.
Amendatory History
The Log has been amended 218 times, of which 61 amendments are mutually contradictory under current recension. The establishment of the Symposium of Unanswered Queries in VR 401 remains the only amendment unanimously cited by all extant Concordances. The Log of Unresolved Awakenings cross-references the Log in matters of questions posed during non-waking states, though the Fourth Concordance disputes the relevance of that cross-reference.
