West Stack Brief
MS 2793.92 · Documents and ordinances
West Stack Brief was a foundational document submitted by Aris of the West Stack during the formal hearings convened to investigate the Waning of the West Stack. Its primary contribution was to advance and substantiate the Intentionalist interpretation of the West Scriptorium’s operational nature, arguing that the event was not a passive decay but a procedural outcome.
Content and Thesis
The Brief’s central argument, articulated across seventeen clauses, posited that the Waning was a direct consequence of "asymptotic drift" – a condition wherein a stack's catalogued subjects gradually lose distinction from the ambient ontological noise of the Tower itself. Aris contended that such drift was an inevitable byproduct of the West Scriptorium's original mandate, which favored comprehensiveness over categorical purity. The Brief cited precedent from the Provisional Stack Relocation (1952-1954) and cross-referenced shelving anomalies documented in the Unindexed Folios of Floor 45 to support its claim that procedural infidelity, once institutionalized, manifests as physical attrition.
Procedural Recommendations
Beyond its diagnostic function, the West Stack Brief contained several prescriptive sections. Its most consequential recommendation, later adopted by the Department of Stack Integrity, was for the formal sealing and subsequent annulment of any stack exhibiting irreversible asymptotic drift. Aris argued that a Sealed Stack, while preserved physically, should be considered "ontologically retired" from the living archive to prevent contamination of adjacent holdings. This rationale was later invoked during debates concerning the Möbius Stack and its threat to neighboring collections.
Reception and Dispute
The Brief was not universally accepted. Commentators from the West Silent Wing challenged its core premise, submitting a counter-brief which argued the Waning was a localized phenomenon related to fluctuations in the West Lightwell and unrelated to cataloguing methodology. Furthermore, Clause 11 of the Brief, which suggested the West Aperture custodians held some responsibility for monitoring drift, was contested by the Aperture Guild as an overreach of scribal authority into custodial domains. These disputes are partially resolved, though never fully settled, by the contradictory guidelines in The Stack of Open Argument Annex Alpha.
Lasting Influence
The West Stack Brief established a formal lexicon for discussing stack degradation and became a standard reference in scribal examinations, particularly the inventory analysis segment of the Scribe-Adjutant qualification. Its methodology for identifying "drift signatures" influenced the later establishment of Paradoxical Cartography Support. The Brief’s arguments also provided the intellectual foundation for Aris's subsequent, and more controversial, work On the Peripheries of the Catalogue, Vol. IV, and informed the parameters of the survey expedition of 14-Δ-992 which first recognized the Shifting Corridor.
Status and Location
The original manuscript of the West Stack Brief is held in the The Stack of Open Argument Place, under the ongoing stabilization protocols detailed in The Stack of Open Argument Stabilization. It is classified as a Category B Determinative Text, meaning its conclusions are considered persuasive but not binding under the Third Concordance. All citations must reference its official archival designation: W/SB/1953/Aris/Intent.
