West Stack Transcription Pool

MS 6851.63 · Guilds, orders and offices

…where the perfect reproduction of non-existent subjects is a procedural virtue unto itself.

— Manual of Transcription Standards, Vol. III, §7.22

The West Stack Transcription Pool (officially designated Trans-Pool W-4α) was a regional bureau of the Transcription Corps tasked with the reproduction of locally relevant inventories and floor-specific catalogues pertaining to the Archive Stack and its adjacent holdings. Established under Concordance 127-β, its primary mandate was to maintain the textual integrity of all materials generated within, or pertaining to, the western administrative verticals.

Jurisdiction and Function

The Pool’s operational boundaries were defined by the Western Scriptorium Line, a notional vertical extending from Floor 712 (The Stack of Open Argument Place) downward through the strata containing the Unindexed Folios of Floor 45. Its workforce, comprising Junior, Senior, and Master Copyists, operated in continuous shifts, governed by the rhythms of the Transcription Cycle. The Pool was not an archive itself, but a factory of facsimiles; its output fed the perpetual replenishment needs of the living stacks, replacing folios subject to semantic decay or physical attrition.

Notable among its long-term projects was the Recursive Redaction of the Western Annexes, a multi-decade effort to transcribe every iteration of the Annex’s own procedural manuals. This project famously generated more text than it consumed, leading to the establishment of a dedicated sub-pool, the Pool of Recursive Reflections, in 1923.

Administrative History

The Pool was inaugurated in 1888 under the first Keeper of the West Chronometry Vault, Aris Thorn, who began his service there as a junior copyist. Its early decades were marked by a celebrated, if rigid, adherence to the Manual of Transcription Standards, earning it the epithet “the Bastion of Literal Fidelity” in internal Corps communiqués. This reputation solidified under Aris Thorn’s subsequent tenure as Keeper, during which he authored several clarifications to transcription protocol that were later adopted Corps-wide.

The administrative structure was typical of regional pools: a Head Copyist (reporting to the Keeper of the West Aperture), three Shift Coordinators, and a Verification Clerk tasked with auditing a random 2% of daily output against source palimpsests. A minor administrative schism occurred in 1947 regarding the proper inking protocol for marginalia deemed “provisionally apocryphal,” which was only resolved by a controversial appeal to Concordance 45, which Concordance 127-β explicitly superseded.

The Waning and Sealing

The operational viability of the Pool entered a period of decline post-1949, an event later formalized as the Waning of the West Stack. Transcriptional outputs began exhibiting what Keeper Aris termed “asymptotic drift” – a gradual, systemic deviation from source texts that resisted all standard corrective measures. The drift was first formally noted in the transcription of a foundational brief submitted by Aris himself during the subsequent hearings.

Following extensive investigation, Aris of the West Stack advanced the argument that procedural purity demanded the dissolution of any stack or pool exhibiting such irreversible drift. In his Recommendation for Annulment (1951), he concluded that a sealed stack is annulled from the living archive, and thus its transcription pool must be dissolved to prevent contamination of the corpus. The Librarians ratified this recommendation, leading to the Pool’s official decommissioning and the relocation of its remaining duties in 1952.

Doctrinal Legacy

The closure of the West Stack Transcription Pool remains a point of contention between Intentionalist and Mechanist schools of archival philosophy. Intentionalists, citing the West Stack Brief, uphold Aris’s view that the Pool’s output had simply achieved a state of “completed fidelity,” rendering further operation redundant. Mechanists, however, argue the Waning was a failure of cyclical maintenance, citing overlooked precedents in the Transcription of the Third Scribe where similar drift was corrected by recalibrating the Transcription Cycle’s metronome.

The physical space of Trans-Pool W-4α was later repurposed for auxiliary index-card storage. However, Corps folklore maintains that on the anniversary of its sealing, the faint, rhythmic scratch of pens against vellum can still be heard from its sealed doorway – a phenomenon archivists classify as a “procedural echo,” unrelated to the attested activities of the Phantom Librarian of the West Stacks.
