The Pristine Manual of Luminous Papyrus Erasure

Definition and Standing
The Pristine Manual of Luminous Papyrus Erasure is the founding instructional text of the Papyrus Guild's erasure discipline, held in the Restricted Reading Room of Floor 208 and consulted by permit only. It sets out, in ninety-one leaves of its own material, the methods by which Luminous Papyrus may be uninscribed without destroying the substrate. The Manual is unusual among Guild instruments in that it is written on the substance it governs: the leaves are themselves Luminous Papyrus, and the text is legible only because the passages describing erasure were never themselves erased. The Guild's standard reading of this fact is that the Manual is a demonstration as much as a document.
It is called Pristine not because of its condition — the lower right corner of Leaf 7 is scorched, and the frontispiece bears a thumbprint of uncertain age — but because it establishes the state to which erased papyrus is said to return. The word is a technical term in the Manual, defined at Leaf 1 verso as "the condition of a sheet before its first inscription, insofar as that condition can be approached but never again occupied."
Composition and the Disputed Recension Question
The Manual is attributed to Aethelred's Silence in the colophon of Leaf 91, though the attribution is written in a later hand and the colophon's seal is that of the third scriptorium rather than the author's own. Internal evidence places the composition at some point after the Reed Colonies were placed under sole Guild management, since the Manual assumes an uninterrupted supply of phototrophic pith and gives no instructions for scarcity. Leaf 44 discusses the recovery of pith from damaged sheets, but treats it as a salvage operation, "permissible only in the years of the blight."
Two recensions circulate. The Long Recension, held on Floor 208, runs to ninety-one leaves. The Short Recension, catalogued on Floor 63, runs to sixty-two and omits the entire treatment of gradient erasure at Leaves 55–61. Which is prior has been disputed since the Concordance on Successive Recensions was amended to say that "the earlier text is the one first sealed," a formulation that resolves nothing, since the Floor 63 copy bears an earlier seal and the Floor 208 copy bears an earlier registration number. The dispute is kept alive chiefly by the Office of Seal Precedence, which has declined to rule on it eleven times.
Method: What May and May Not Be Unwritten
The Manual's central doctrine is that erasure removes inscription, not information. Under the Method of Graduated Withdrawal set out at Leaves 12–30, an eraser works inward from the margins at a rate calibrated to the sheet's luminescence, pausing whenever the spectral emission of the page shifts toward the violet. Luminous Papyrus retains a memory of pressure, and the Manual is explicit that an erased sheet can be read back by any hand trained at the College of Luminous Anomalies. Erasure therefore conceals nothing from the Guild. It conceals from everyone else.
"Let the eraser hold no hope of forgetting. The sheet will remember what the hand has taken, and the hand that reads pressure will find it. Erase, then, for the reader you intend, and know that the reader you do not intend is already coming up the stair."
— Pristine Manual of Luminous Papyrus Erasure, Leaf 30 recto
A plain prohibition follows at Leaf 31: erasure is never to be undertaken on a sheet still warm from the scriptorium lamp. The Manual gives no reason. The prohibition is enforced by the Wardens of the Warm Sheet, a body of two, of whom only one has ever been observed on duty.
The Manual expressly excludes certain classes of text from erasure altogether. Titular inscriptions are protected under Leaf 38, which invokes the 50-by-35-centimeter standard of the Title Sheet and forbids reducing any sheet below its title. Conditional statements inscribed under the practice of Floor 311 are likewise excluded, since erasing them has on three recorded occasions caused the condition to cease to apply while the statement remained. The third such occasion, in the winter of the year the Manual's sixth annex was sealed, is described in the Luminous Quarantine Ledger in language the Manual declines to repeat.
The Quill Question
The Manual nowhere authorizes the use of the Sanctioned Quill of Erasure, and its silence on the Quill has been read both as tacit permission and as deliberate exclusion. The Long Recension's Leaf 72 describes erasure "by friction of the prepared reed" and does not mention a quill at all. The Short Recension's Leaf 49 names the Quill directly, in a passage absent from the Long Recension, and requires the operator to hold it "as one holds a grievance, firmly and without display."
That the two recensions differ on the instrument while agreeing on almost nothing else is a source of continuing irritation to the Guild of Preparatory Friction, which maintains that the Quill Question was settled in its favour by the Velvet of Erasure annex and should not be reopened. The Office of Seal Precedence has declined to rule on this as well.
The Pristine Manual Incident of Floor 208
In the fourth month of a winter whose number the cataloguers have not agreed upon, a reader under permit attempted to verify the Manual's claims about gradient erasure by applying them to the Manual itself. The reader worked from the inner margin of Leaf 6, where the discussion begins, and was intercepted at Leaf 7 by the duty librarian, Clerk Ambrose Vell, who has recorded the incident in a memorandum of nineteen pages. Eight lines of Leaves 6 and 7 were damaged beyond the Manual's own standard of recovery. The scorch on Leaf 7 is not from the incident; Clerk Vell is careful to say so twice.
Vell's grievance, appended to the memorandum as Annex C, is not with the reader. It is with the Manual, which he argues should have foreseen the difficulty: "A text that teaches erasure and is itself erasable has left an obvious door open, and I am the one who must stand in it." The Guild's response, sealed the following year, was to bind the remaining leaves of the Long Recension in Luminous Mortar at the gutter — a measure the Manual would have described, had it been consulted, as the destruction of the thing preserved.
Relation to Other Instruments
The Manual is to be read alongside, and never instead of, the Manual for Anomalous Conduits, with which it shares a numbering system but no common author. Where the two conflict — chiefly on the handling of sheets that have been inscribed twice — the Manual is generally preferred for questions of substance and the Conduits Manual for questions of procedure, a division established by the Concordance of Bilateral Precedence in a clause that both offices cite in support of opposite conclusions. The Papyrus Guild's supervision of Luminous Papyrus waste cycles is treated separately and does not fall under the Manual, though the Luminous Beetle of Perpetual Afternoon has twice been found in the Restricted Reading Room and removed.
