Sanctioned Quill of Erasure
MS 0923.02 · Objects and instruments
The Sanctioned Quill of Erasure is a single, silver-nibbed writing instrument of indeterminate material, permanently housed within a triple-glazed crystal reliquary on Floor 9001. Its sole sanctioned purpose is the permanent, traceless deletion of text from active Concordance parchment, an action governed by the most stringent procedural protocols in Tower governance.
Physical Properties and Containment
The Quill itself measures 22.4 centimetres in length. Material analysis, as recorded in Annex Δ of the Inventory of Proscribed Instruments, has proven inconclusive; it is neither metallic, organic, nor mineral, yet exhibits properties of all three. It requires no ink, instead drawing upon the conceptual substrate of the text it is used to modify. The reliquary, a hermetically sealed chamber of layered, lead-crystal glass, is maintained at a constant temperature of 13°C and a humidity of 45%. Access is controlled via three independent mechanical locks, whose keys are held by the Office of Voluntary Correspondence, the presiding Archivist-Proctor of the relevant department, and the Grand Curator of the Skeptical Cartographers’ Guild.
Protocols for Use
Authorization for wielding the Quill requires triplicate, non-aligned approval, formally submitted on vellum stamped with the sigils of the three key-holding offices. The text to be erased must be cited in full in the authorization request. According to the Eighteenth Concordance, Clause 14, the act of erasure must be witnessed by two Fourth-Order Librarians from the Cartographers' Auxiliary, who are responsible for recording the resultant conceptual "void" in the marginalia. The protocol meticulously detailed in the Twenty-Second Concordance, ratified following the Year of the Quill 114, explicitly forbids its use on any document other than an active Concordance. A noted procedural parallel, though distinct in purpose, exists with the authorization ritual for the Sanguine Quill.
The Incident of 114 and Doctrinal Repercussions
The Year of the Quill 114 marks the only recorded incident of the Quill's unsanctioned application. A junior archivist, later identified only as "Subject Theta," allegedly utilized the Quill to remove a single clause from a draft trade agreement concerning Manual Porterage rights between Floors 10,007 and 10,008. The erasure was not of the clause's text, but of its designated sub-clause number, rendering the agreement's ratification sequence logically incoherent. This event directly precipitated the Schism of the Silent Quill and led to the comprehensive reforms codified in the Twenty-Second Concordance. The subsequent Proscribed Doctrines, Volume 89, is largely dedicated to analysing the metaphysical implications of the incident.
Contemporary Debate and Advocacy
Modern discourse surrounding the Quill is polarized. The orthodox position, upheld by the Synod of the Quill, maintains that its existence is a necessary, if grave, instrument of final editorial authority, and that its current restrictions are optimally secure. This view is challenged by the Order of the Drowned Quill, a clandestine consortium of mid-rank Librarians who argue for the Quill's "procedural and ethical rehabilitation." They posit, controversially, that the Quill's power could be responsibly applied to refine foundational texts beyond the Concordances, or even to enact a controlled form of Signatory Obliviation. Their petitions, however, are consistently blocked by the Office of Voluntary Correspondence, which cites the precedent of 114 as irrefutable proof of the dangers of mission creep.
Related Instruments and Misconceptions
The Sanctioned Quill is often erroneously conflated with other regulated writing tools. The Kaelen Quill is used for temporal annotations and possesses no deletive properties. The Sanguine Quill is employed solely for recording entries in the Register of Sanctioned Melancholy. Furthermore, the Quill is not a relative of the common Sanctioned Yellow Tape used for temporary cordons. A more radical, albeit universally dismissed, theory proposed by the heretic Heronymus the Unbound suggested the Quill was not a tool at all, but a dormant entity that consumed meaning, and that its reliquary was not a protective housing but a prison. This thesis was itself erased from the debate records via standard editorial process, not by the Quill in question.
