Supervisor Designation

MS 6292.12 · Practices and doctrines

The Supervisor Designation is a procedural rank within the Librarian hierarchy, formally established by the Fifteenth Concordance, Clause 89, to govern the administration of designated holdings that have been deemed to exhibit "catalytic or recursive potential." Holders of this designation are primarily responsible for implementing containment protocols and authorizing research interactions with unstable catalogued entities.

"A Supervisor of Script must provide triplicate authorization for placement into a Dormitory Vault."
—Excerpt, Third Concordance, Clause 17, Sub-clause

Origins and Legal Basis

The need for the Supervisor Designation arose following the Soporific Spore Incident of Cycle 12,432. The incident highlighted a regulatory gap: while the Bureau of Designation could assign identifiers like Provisional Designation PD-8812, no single authority existed to oversee the active lifecycle of a designated entity post-cataloguing. The Fifteenth Concordance created the designation to address this, separating the act of naming from the duty of ongoing custodianship. The first Supervisor was appointed to oversee all fungal and spore-based unrealities on Annex Δ.

Appointment and Responsibilities

Appointment is made by the Librarian of Coherence (currently Elara) upon recommendation from both the Bureau of Designation and the relevant floor curator. A Supervisor's core duties, as enumerated in Clause 91, are threefold: to maintain the integrity of the holding's designated status, to enforce all applicable Concordances regarding its handling, and to log all interactions in the Master Folio. Their most visible function is granting the triplicate authorizations required for procedures such as transfer to a Dormitory Vault or controlled exposure within an Interstitial testing chamber.

Scope of Authority

A Supervisor's authority is strictly limited to the specific holdings under their purview. A Supervisor of Luminous Attenuation, for example, has no jurisdiction over matters pertaining to a Supervisor of Acoustic Shadows. This specialization is intended to prevent the consolidation of power over diverse unrealities. However, Clause 94 introduces a notable exception: if two designated holdings are judged to be Adjacent Unrealities, their respective Supervisors must confer and jointly sign any cross-contamination permits. This has led to the creation of several permanent joint committees, such as the Office for Resonant Echoes in Annex Theta.

Controversies and the Axiomatic Purity Debate

The Bureau of Axiomatic Purity has repeatedly challenged the philosophical foundation of the Supervisor role. In a series of advisories, it has argued that intensive supervision implies a reality to the supervised phenomenon, thereby violating the principle that catalogued entities are unreal outside their specific Tower context. This reached a head during the deliberations over Ordinance 23.Δ, where the Bureau contended that "a thing which suspends the activity of unrealities is, by regulatory necessity, a reality itself, and should be re-designated accordingly." This argument was ultimately overruled by citing the Frame-Within-Frame Corollary, which permits pragmatic administrative realities within the Tower's operational frame.

Notable Supervisors

While most Supervisors operate in anonymity, a few are recorded in the chronicles for their doctrinal or procedural contributions.

  • Alaric, Third of his Designation served as the first Supervisor of Fungal Unrealities. His meticulous logs of the Aspergillus soporifex spores became the template for all subsequent supervisory protocols.
  • Supervisor Arrin (posthumously designated pursuant to the Seventh Concordance, Clause 412) is noted for developing the "Arrin Protocol" for the safe observation of self-referential paradoxes. The protocol mandates a three-floor observational buffer, now standard for all holdings classified as recursively unstable.
  • The current Supervisor of Pendular Time, whose identity is sealed in the Administrative Spire, is credited with reconciling the Central Chronometer’s metrics with the non-linear time signatures recorded on Floor -7.

The Supervisor Designation remains a cornerstone of practical archival management. It embodies the Tower’s compromise between the ontological purity demanded by the Concordances and the pragmatic need to manage its own contents safely. As Librarian Elara noted in her Addendum to Clause 89, "The Supervisor does not affirm the reality of the held; they affirm the reality of the hold."
