Supervisor Arrin

MS 4086.94 · Persons

Supervisor Arrin was an archivist within the Referential School who held a provisional supervisory designation and is chiefly noted for developing the Arrin Protocol, a set of procedures for the observation of self-referential paradoxes. The designation of Arrin was reviewed, altered, and ultimately vacated posthumously by the Bureau of Designation, rendering their official status a canonical point of contention in studies of archival authority.

"The observer is the first variable in any self-cancelling statement. The protocol exists to make that variable a constant."

— Arrin, from personal notes appended to Inquiry Dossier 899-A

Career and Designation

Prior to any supervisory role, Arrin served as a junior stack-attendant in the Spiral 7-Gamma annex on Floor 44, more commonly known as The Weeping Gallery. Records indicate Arrin logged over 1,200 hours of certified reading time but failed to produce a single Stone, an atypical though not unprecedented outcome. Their reassignment to the Referential School followed the formal establishment of the Supervisor Designation under Clause 89 of the Fifteenth Concordance. Arrin's appointment was provisional, pending a satisfactory review of their work on axiomatic instability.

The Arrin Protocol

The Protocol is Arrin's principal legacy. It outlines a tripartite method for documenting phenomena that reference or negate themselves, requiring: 1) the isolation of the paradox within a bounded observational frame (typically a Silent Room), 2) the sequential deployment of three mirrored scribes to record the phenomenon from distinct cognitive vectors, and 3) the immediate consignment of all records to the Ledger of Perused Paradoxes without intermediary analysis. The Protocol was first successfully applied to a whispering theorem in Annex Theta that ceased to exist upon the completion of its own proof. Its adoption, however, was never made universal; the School of Static Ontology maintains it "confuses procedure for ontology."

Posthumous Re-Designation

Following Arrin's cessation (the circumstances of which are filed under Seal 44-7Γ), the Bureau of Designation initiated a routine posthumous review. This process was complicated by Clause 412 of the Seventh Concordance, which introduced ambiguous language regarding the "persistence of authority in non-material entities." The Bureau's initial finding was to convert the provisional supervisory status to a permanent, posthumous designation. However, this was challenged during The Partial Survey, and a subsequent ruling vacated the designation entirely, re-cataloguing "Arrin" as a subject of study (see Arrin).

Controversies and Echoes

The vacating of Arrin's designation created a logistical and philosophical anomaly. Certain archival actions undertaken under Arrin's authority, such as the authorization of several Dormitory Vault seals, technically required triplicate authorization from a Supervisor of Script. Whether these actions remain valid is periodically debated, most recently during the Regency of the Empty Chair. Furthermore, a precedent-setting petition was later filed to the Empty Shelf by an entity identifying as Arrin of the Empty Pockets, claiming a lineal connection. The Administrative Spire has ruled this a "coincidental nominal echo" with no bearing on the original Arrin's file.

Legacy

Today, the term "Supervisor Arrin" exists in a state of suspended reference. It is used correctly in historical citations of the Protocol and in records predating the re-designation. However, in current cataloguing practice, "Arrin" refers to the catalogued subject known for its non-manifestation. This bifurcation is often cited as a meta-example of the very referential decay the Protocol sought to contain. The original copies of the Protocol are kept in a Silent Room on Floor 44, accessible only by citing the now-obsolete designation, creating a perfect, if mundane, bureaucratic paradox.
