Arrin

MS 7008.11 · Practices and doctrines

Arrin is a designation of significant archival complexity within the Tower, referring to at least seven distinct entities catalogued across various floors and concordances. The primary difficulty in resolving the designation stems from the principle of coincidental nominal overlap, as outlined in the Third Concordance, Clause 19, which states that shared nomenclature does not imply shared ontology. All entities designated "Arrin" are subject to the protocols established for Arrin of the Empty Pockets, though the applicability of these protocols is frequently contested.

Catalogued Entities

The following are the primary entities formally registered under the designation "Arrin" in the Central Nomenclator.

Arrin of the Empty Pockets
The Master-Cataloger of the Sub-basement Cataloguing Corps and the subject of Clause 412, which granted him a posthumous designation. He is considered the primus inter pares of all Arrins for procedural purposes.
Supervisor Arrin
Credited with developing the Arrin Protocol for the observation of self-referential paradoxes. His assignment to Spiral 7-Gamma on Floor 44 ("The Weeping Gallery") is well-documented, though the date of his disappearance coincides with the final annotation of the Preliminary Survey of that spiral.
Junior Indexer Arrin
An anomalous figure who logged over 1,200 hours of certified reading time in the Lithic Repository without manifesting a single Stone. His case is often cited in debates on the efficacy of the materialization statutes.
Librarian Arrin
Attributed with the final, enigmatic annotation to the Spiral 7-Gamma survey: "The sound is not within the walls; the walls are within the sound." Whether this entity is identical to Supervisor Arrin is a matter of ongoing scholarly dispute.
Arrin of the Seventh Landing
The first Stairwarden, appointed by provision of Concordance 44. Records pertaining to his tenure are fragmentary, primarily consisting of duty rosters and complaints regarding drafts on the landing.
The Subject "Arrin"
A catalogued subject, the focus of Inquiry Dossier 899-A, known for its state of persistent non-manifestation. It is categorized under "Theoretical Personae" in the Auxiliary Index.
The Posthumous Designate
A procedural entity created by the enactment of Clause 412, existing solely for the administration of pensionary rights and the resolution of petitions submitted after the petitioner's cessation.

Doctrinal Conflicts

The existence of multiple Arrins presents persistent challenges to Tower administration. The Regency of the Empty Chair issued Ruling 77-B, which attempted to standardize reference by stating that "any unmodified use of 'Arrin' in official correspondence shall refer to the entity relevant to the document's spiral and floor of origin." This ruling is largely ignored in practice, as most documents originate from multiple administrative layers simultaneously.

A more serious conflict arises from the Fifth Concordance, Clause 210, which mandates that "no designation may be applied to both a living functionary and a catalogued subject." The simultaneous existence of Junior Indexer Arrin (a functionary) and the Subject "Arrin" (a catalogued subject) thus represents a technical violation. This is conventionally resolved by declaring Junior Indexer Arrin to be in a state of "procedural latency" rather than active function, a loophole formalized in Amendment 12 to the Seventh Concordance.

The Arrin Protocol

The most substantive legacy associated with the designation is the Arrin Protocol, a set of observational procedures for documenting phenomena that reference themselves. The Protocol's authorship is attributed to Supervisor Arrin, though the original manuscript is lost. All extant copies are transcriptions made by Junior Indexer Arrin during his tenure, leading some scholars to argue the protocol itself is a self-referential artifact, and thus its own first successful subject.

The Protocol is formally applied in the Spiral 7-Gamma annex, though its utility has been questioned since the annex's survey was declared complete by Librarian Arrin. Adherence to the Protocol is now mandatory for all inquiries into nominal overlaps, per Ordinance 899.

Petitionary Legacy

A notable thread connecting several Arrins is the submission of petitions. Arrin of the Empty Pockets famously submitted a petition for posthumous recognition of his earlier, unsuccessful petitions. Junior Indexer Arrin's 1,200 hours of reading were ostensibly part of a petition for reclassification. The Subject "Arrin"' entire dossier is, by some interpretations, a petition for manifestation. This has led to the informal "Arrin Principle" in clerical circles: that any sufficiently persistent petition will, through bureaucratic inevitability, generate an Arrin to submit it.

Scholarly Disagreement

The primary academic controversy concerns whether the Arrins are distinct entities or facets of a single, dispersed archival phenomenon. The "Unitarian" school, championed by the Department of Nominal Cohesion, argues that the Tower's records merely capture different aspects of one complex, multi-floor entity. The "Pluralist" school, supported by the Bureau of Designate Integrity, maintains they are seven separate beings linked only by administrative coincidence. A third, marginal view posited in the Partial Survey suggests "Arrin" is not a designation for entities at all, but a category of event—specifically, the event of a record becoming entangled with its own referent. This view is generally dismissed as needlessly metaphysical.

Resolution is unlikely, as any convened panel to study the matter would, by the terms of the Arrin Protocol, have to include a member designated Arrin, thus replicating the problem under observation.
