The Designation Plaque
MS 1272.90 · Objects and instruments
The Designation Plaque is the standardized bronze artifact, measuring 220 mm by 180 mm by 12 mm, which physically manifests and concludes the Designation process for a Tower holding. As per Concordance 17, Annex D, Clause 4, "the affixation of the Designation Plaque constitutes the final, irrevocable step in the recognition of a holding’s official status." The plaque serves as both a legal certificate and the primary physical interface for Designation Resonance monitoring.
Physical Specifications and Fabrication
Casting of all Designation Plaques falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Seventh Metalwrights, utilizing the same proprietary B-7a bronze alloy specified for the Thorne Ceiling Plaque (Concordance 17, Annex C). The obverse features the official Holding Designation in raised, serifed script, the date of final designation (Tower Calendar), and the seal of the Bureau of Designation. The reverse bears the foundry mark of the Seventh Metalwrights, a unique serial number, and, in smaller type, the relevant Temporal Designation clause under which the designation was processed.
Notably, the plaque lacks any descriptive text regarding the holding it represents. As Senior Archivist Elara noted in her treatise On Material Signifiers, "The plaque is not a label for the holding; it is the holding’s legal shadow, made metal."
Ceremony of Affixation
The placement of a Designation Plaque is a formal ceremony overseen by a Supervisor Designation and witnessed by no fewer than three clerks from the Bureau of Designation. The plaque must be mounted on a load-bearing wall or primary structural column within ten vertical floors of the holding’s officially logged location, though the exact site is often arbitrary. The ceremony concludes with the recitation of the Chain-of-Custody Acknowledgment, the canonical text of which is held on the Primary Standard Plaque. Following affixation, the holding is considered fully integrated into the Tower’s legal and archival topology.
Functional Role in Resonance Monitoring
Beyond its legal function, the Designation Plaque acts as the focal point for Designation Resonance monitoring. Resonators from the Bureau of Designation perform quarterly scans, using specialized apertures to detect any "attenuation, fibrillation, or paradox bleed" (Concordance 22, Clause 89) in the plaque’s metaphysical signature. A stable resonance indicates the holding is properly anchored; fluctuations may trigger a review and potential re-designation under a Paradox Designation. The Thorne Ceiling Plaque incident of 742 TC, wherein it acted as an unintended amplifier during a Silent Fracture, is frequently cited in resonator training protocols as a cautionary example.
Disputes and Ambiguities
The primary scholarly disagreement concerning the Designation Plaque revolves around its necessity. The Reformist School, led by theorists in the Lower Stacks, argues that the plaque is a bureaucratic relic. They posit that a holding’s designation, once logged in the Central Folio, is sufficient, and the physical object is a redundant, resource-intensive formality. The Traditionalist School, citing Concordance 17’s "doctrine of tangible commitment," maintains that the plaque is essential as a "spatial anchor" and that its removal would cause a cascading failure of designation integrity across adjacent floors.
A further, more practical dispute involves plaques assigned to Provisional Designations. These plaques are cast and serialized but remain in the vaults of the Seventh Metalwrights until the designation is made permanent. Concordance 31 stipulates they must be destroyed if the provisional status lapses, while Concordance 12-A suggests they be placed in a "liminal repository." The Bureau’s current Process Designation PD-45 instructs clerks to "store indefinitely pending inter-concordance reconciliation," resulting in several warehouses filled with unaffixed plaques.
Notable Variants and Exceptional Cases
While standardization is the norm, two notable variants exist. The "Interim Designation Plaque," used during the Aris Spiral stabilization period, was made of lacquered wood and carried a caveat regarding temporal instability. All were supposedly replaced, though unverified sightings persist. Secondly, plaques for holdings with recursive or self-referential properties are cast with a matte, non-reflective finish to minimize resonance feedback loops, as per Bureau Directive 887.
The only recorded instance of a Designation Plaque being moved post-affixation occurred in Vestibule Epsilon, following the re-mapping of Sector Theta. The plaque was relocated under a full ceremonial repeat, requiring a temporary Provisional Designation Number and a 300-page addendum to the holding’s log. This event is now a standard case study in the Obligation of Designation seminars for junior clerks.
