Strict Concordantists
MS 7984.10 · Practices and doctrines
Strict Concordantists are a faction within the Librarians distinguished by their exclusive adherence to the letter of the most recently amended version of any given Concordance. They reject the interpretive traditions of Strict Constructionists and the operational flexibility of Proceduralists, arguing that only the active text of a Concordance, as it exists at the moment of consultation, carries any authority.
Core Doctrine
The central tenet of Strict Concordantist thought is the Doctrine of Temporal Purity, first articulated in the marginalia of M. Voss’s copy of the Unadorned Text. It posits that each amendment to a Concordance does not merely alter a clause, but creates an entirely new document. Previous versions are considered archival artifacts with no bearing on present governance. This leads to their most well-known operating principle: "If it is not in the current ink, it does not exist." Consequently, they maintain private, continuously updated ledgers of every Concordance’s active state, a practice formalized in their own internal governing document, the Register of Present Verity.
Operational Impact
In practice, this doctrine creates significant administrative friction. A Strict Concordantist referencing Annex Delta of the Ninety-Second Concordance for an "active consultation" protocol will ignore all precedents, rulings, or operational glosses generated before the annex's last textual modification, even if those modifications were purely grammatical. This often brings them into conflict with the Office of Verification, which, while favoring strict adherence, frequently relies on precedent chains established under older versions of texts. A notable incident recorded in the Ledger of Irregular Cadences involved a Strict Concordantist team halting a Vellum Descent Sigma-1 operation mid-process because a verb tense in the governing ordinance had been changed six hours prior, rendering their previously approved action plan "a description of a fictional event."
Scholarly and Procedural Disputes
The most acute criticism of Strict Concordantism arises from its handling of contradictory clauses across different Concordances. While a Strict Constructionist might seek to resolve the conflict through hierarchical weight or the Tripartite Test of Inherency, and Pragmatists would defer to operational necessity, Strict Concordantists adhere to each contradictory clause with equal fidelity based solely on its individual amendment date. This can result in directives that are mutually impossible to fulfill. Their solution, as outlined in the Register, is to execute both directives sequentially in order of the recency of their respective amendments, often leading to ritualistic, abortive actions that satisfy the letter of one clause before immediately violating it to satisfy the next.
This approach was famously lambasted by Arbiter Calix in the ruling In Re: Contested Resonance Parameters, who stated, "The Strict Concordantist would, with perfect logic, walk into a wall because Ordinance A commands 'proceed forward' and, upon collision, immediately walk into the opposite wall because Ordinance B, amended later, also commands 'proceed forward.' Their truth is a series of disconnected, perfect moments of obedience, creating not a path, but a pile of bruises."
Relation to Other Holdings
Strict Concordantists are particularly vigilant regarding holdings whose definitions are tied to Concordance language. The management of Archival Dust, for instance, governed by Concordance Theta, is subject to frequent procedural recalibration by their sect following any editorial change to the Concordance. They also argue that the Provisional Designation Number for any item under Phase 3 Quarantine becomes invalid if the template for such designations in Third Concordance, Annex B is amended, potentially creating recursive identity crises for the contained subjects. Their influence is most tangible within the Department of Provenance, where their insistence on strictly current templates for Validation Chain assemblages has led to a Byzantine system of version-stamping every component.
Current Status
While never numerous, Strict Concordantists hold disproportionate influence in textual oversight committees. Their scrupulous, if disruptive, audits are credited with identifying several latent contradictions in the Concordance system that might otherwise have gone unnoticed until a crisis. However, their refusal to acknowledge the operational reality of the Tower’s continuous existence between amendments limits their authority in most day-to-day functions. They are largely tolerated as a necessary corrective—a living embodiment of the principle that the Tower’s law is a fluid document, and that absolute fidelity to its fluidity is a form of madness.
