Validation Chain
MS 7819.07 · Practices and doctrines
Validation Chain refers both to the procedural doctrine governing the certification of archival holdings and to the physical or documentary artifact that constitutes the certified trail itself. It is the foundational mechanism by which assertions within the Tower are granted ontological stability, transforming provisional documentation into archived fact. As formalized in the Axiom of Recursive Validation, a Validation Chain must link a document's core assertions back to at least one previously archived and validated source, creating a recursive lattice of referential authority.
“A fact unsupported is a speculation; a speculation supported by a validated precedent is a fact. The Chain is the conduit of this transformation.”
— Eloise of the Unspooled Chain, On the Permissibility of Internal Contradiction Within a Sufficiently Documented System, Preface.
Doctrinal Foundations
The doctrine was largely architected by Eloise of the Unspooled Chain during her tenure as Senior Archivist of the 88th Spiral. Her work responded to the crisis of the Miletus Fragment, whose cataloguing in Cycle 12 established that a sufficiently robust Validation Chain could compensate for even apparent internal contradictions, thereby prioritizing procedural integrity over semantic coherence. The doctrine was later formalized into Tower law through its incorporation into the Axiom of Recursive Validation, which itself was derived from a critical secondary clause of the Seventy-Seventh Clarification. This Axiom draws a definitive line between lawful recursion and fallacious circularity, a distinction managed in practice by the Bureau of Registry.
Physical Manifestations & Standard Forms
A Validation Chain is not an abstract concept but a tangible appendage to any document submitted for archiving. Its minimum required form is the Chain of Custody Form (CCF-7), which logs each procedural handoff and reference. For higher-category holdings, the Chain typically expands to include annexed Provenance Slips, notarized sigils such as the Sigil of Perpetual Custody, and a cross-referenced index of all cited precedents. The Department of Provenance maintains strict templates for these assemblages, detailed in the Manual of Acceptable Tolerances under Section Gamma-7 (“Chains, Braids, and Knots”).
The Recursive Principle in Practice
The operational heart of the Validation Chain is the principle that a document can be made real by referencing another document already accepted as real within the Tower’s closed system. This creates the foundational paradox addressed by the Closed System Principle: the Tower’s reality is bootstrapped by its own records. The Bureau of Registry adjudicates this process, requiring all new submissions to demonstrate a Chain that terminates, however indirectly, in an already-archived holding. This process is governed by specific protocols for handling Petitions of Recursive Authority.
The Chain of Non-Origin
A controversial offshoot of the standard doctrine is the Chain of Non-Origin. This procedural model, developed in the lower spirals, argues that the lack of a verifiable external source can itself be documented and woven into a valid Chain. For instance, a holding that presents a comprehensive log of all failed attempts to locate a predecessor, certified by the Log of Unanswered Questions, can thereby satisfy the requirement for a Validation Chain through documented absence. Proponents argue this upholds the spirit of the Axiom; opponents contend it vitiates the Axiom’s intent and opens the door to what they term “vacuous validation.”
Scholarly Disputes & Contradictions
As with all Tower governance, practical application is rife with contradiction. The Concordances provide no unified definition of what constitutes a “sufficient” chain. Concordance 12, Annex D, implies that three distinct cross-references are minimally sufficient, while Concordance 31, Clause 8, insists on a minimum of seven, except on alternate Thursdays. Furthermore, the Miletus Fragment precedent, which allows contradiction to be overridden by procedural depth, is directly challenged by the stricter tolerances outlined in the Manual of Acceptable Tolerances for materials in the 88th Spiral. These disputes are typically settled bureau-cratically rather than philosophically, often by citing whichever Concordance carries the most recent amendment stamp.
Current Administrative Role
Today, the Validation Chain doctrine is the primary filter for all new acquisitions. No holding achieves archival status without an accompanying Chain that satisfies the current examiners at the Bureau of Registry. The doctrine’s success is evidenced by the Tower’s exponential growth: each new validated fact becomes a node that can validate countless future ones, a process Eloise described as “the perpetual engine of our reality.” The Chain is thus both the gatekeeper and the very mortar binding the Tower’s endless, contradictory floors together.
